Our 11 month old called Poppy is in the second week of her first season. She has been trembling and shaking today with her ears down and looks a bit sad. Is this normal for a first season or should I ring the out of hours vet for advice? She is generally a perfectly healthy puppy but just has not been the same during this first season. Thanks for any advice, Mark
Re: Trembling and shaking during first season is this normal ? Hi Mark, yes I think that sounds pretty normal. They can get very clingy or moody, a bit like a teenage girl! Hang in there, it won't last long...
Re: Trembling and shaking during first season is this normal ? Thanks Karen A few minutes after my post my wife was worried and asked me to phone the vet. Poppy would not eat or drink when her water bowl was refreshed which is unusual and was so lethargic and sad looking. I phoned the Vets fearing the out of hours £144 fee I think it is...I paid this once before when poppy had swallowed something plastic one night that needed to come out by being made sick, (out of hours that cost £154 including the drugs or whatever :'( ) Luckily one of the branches of the vets we are with ( Kingston vets in Hull ) are open Saturday afternoons for normal price consultations which is about £26 something or other After explaining the symptoms which included a bit of unexplained sort of half volume quiet yelping occasionally it was decided we would take poppy in for a check up. When I went into the garden to shout poppy she would not even follow me back to the house, just laid against a fence shaking I carried her into the house and she looked so sad and weak. As soon as she saw the dog lead and the sound of car keys jingling she perked up a bit which was great. When we arrived at the vets she was behaving OK just like most dogs do. She was so pleased to see a person in the waiting room that offered her a dog biscuit, she wolfed down two biscuits all behaving like her normal waggy tail self typically. The very nice Vet checked her and all OK although Poppy did not really like being touched by the vet which is unusual a she lets anyone do anything to her at the vets usually, she cowered away into a corner. The vet prescribed some Loxicom to try to help so we will see how it goes. As we left the vets Poppy was her normal self sniffing everything where a dog had been (she is in season remember) and pulling on the lead. As soon as we arrived home she is sad looking again and wont eat. At the moment she is snuggled on her favourite rug in front of the oven and I covered her with a blanket and cuddled her for a while, she is just so cuddly now which I like , she is a bit more settled now. We will see what tomorrow brings. picture below:
Re: Trembling and shaking during first season is this normal ? Isn't it so often the case though, that when you arrive at the surgery, the dog appears perfectly well! Hope you get to the bottom of it and she is soon back to her normal self, with not too much damage to your wallet! Pippa
