    Hi looking for some advice.
My 13 week old Carrick seems to be OK for a couple of days then has a number of soft poos which has often seems to happen overnight, last night he had 3 soft poos between 11.30pm and 6 am.
He is fed on Royal Canine Maxi junior and has been getting wee bits of chicken for training.
He has around 75% of the amount of kibble it advises on the pack and other than one or 2 bits of kibble he isn't fed after 5.30/6pm.

    Any suggestion's please?
    Many thanks
    Carolyn

    Hi Carolyn,

Tummy issues are so common with youngsters,it took many of us ages to get our dogs right ...
When you say 'soft' I'm assuming not full diarrhoea? Royal Canin is one of the better brands ..my dog is settled on the hypoallergenic type now so I'd say your brand is ok but I think there is a puppy version? Rather than the junior? I'd check with your vet ,that might be bIt less rich. How many meals are you feeding? Are you still on 4? If you aren't ,I'd drop back to that and see if that helps. How is he through the night generally,is he settling ok? Stress and excitement can make them a little 'loose' sometimes ,he might be a bit anxious if he's sleeping alone ..

Hmm. I can think of a couple of possibilities :

The chicken is upsetting his tummy but it's taking a few hours to 'make and an appearance'

The amount of dinner is too large for his tummy so it's causing upset.

He's suffering some sort of anxiety in the night

I'd probably start on a process of elimination to see if you can solve it! Puppies and yucky tummies are so common

It could be that his meals are a little too big?

Chicken can affect lots of dogs systems - try fish treats instead, they are much gentler on puppy tummies.

Consider moving him back to four meals for a week or two.

Maxi Junior is the correct puppy one for Labs. I was confused, too; it's what Luna came on.
ProKolin is good for settling tummies but only really for one-offs. It sounds like you have a more fundamental issue. I'd do as Mags says and put him back to four smaller meals to see if that helps, but maybe it's worth taking a faecal sample to the vet if it continues?

Thanks everyone. I'll cut out the chicken.
Although he is on 3 meals a day they are split into a Kong as well. Thinking about it tho he probably gets a fullish portion at dinner time so I'll cut that back a bit.

I'll try nothing going other than kibble for a bit and see how it goes.

    Thanks for all the advice

Try to slowly cut back the amount of food he gets. The bag recommendation is too much. I followed the bag recommendation for a long time and would have some solid stools and alot of yogurt soft stools. I started reducing his daily allotment and found that 65% of the bag allowance would result in him having solid poop. Now I just give him 100 grams of kibble twice a day since he needs to lose some weight anyway.

    Thanks for all the advice.
We tried smaller portions and stuck purely to the kibble but we're still having the same problem.
So we changed to James Well Beloved kibble which our previous lab was on. It contains no wheat, soya etc and for the last week we have had no problems at all, so fingers crossed!

Thanks again for all your advice
