I saw this shared on Facebook this afternoon. Its very interesting. ***SOME PEOPLE MIGHT FIND THIS DISTRESSING*** It depicts a lady who had been warned by her dog (Poppy) that she was to have a seizure and had gone to her bed. Poppy watches over her during the seizure and (quite frankly) licks her into submission! If you read the bit underneath it explains the licking though. I thought it gave a good insight into another aspect of service dogs. It does depict a possibly alarming seizure, so be aware if you watch it. https://youtu.be/LN5mkFz0K44
What a fantastic dog and the explanation of the licking is very interesting, and probably not something you could train. Lovely to see her lay down beside her owner as she improves after the seizure but still very alert and monitoring.
I saw this earlier. The licking was described on the FB post as being designed to clear saliva which can cause choking, to help bring her back from the seizure and to give comfort when she comes around, because often sufferers are scared when they do. So I imagine it's very much part of the training.
Hi this amazing as i have poorly controlled epilepsy and i sometimes dont get warning before my seizures and we got sam hes now 10 weeks old and has witnessed my seizure i do not remember but last week while i was on bed with sam and my bf i had a tonic clonic seizure my bf says while i was having seizure he lay his head on my shoulder and when my seizure stopped he was licking my face until i came round.
How wonderful , just shows how clever our dogs are , even at such a young age too , bless your Sam ( I have a Sam too )
It could well be that your clever little Sam will train himself to be your epilepsy warning system. They are amazing, our dogs.
Thanks everyone yeah im amazed how well he is with it when i got him i was so scared of having one and scaring him i actually had a seizure early this morning and came round he was licking my face and when i says ok sam am ok he started wagging his tale excitedly i just says what a good boy he then lay with me while i had a sleep. Sam has saved my life. I have only started having seizures and been diagnosed epilepsy changed me from outgoing confident always smiling and independant to depression and not going out now i have sam i feel more confident happy and outgoing again i dont even feel the depression anymore getting sam has helped me feel like me again.
Hi Laura, I fixed your picture for you. You just need to click in the box on Photobucket that says "IMG" (under "Share this photo"), which will copy the link, and you then just paste it into the box where you'd write your message on here. No need to click the image button on the toolbar or anything.
Wow go Sam! I'm glad your feeling more positive about your epilepsy- hopefully your seizures will start to get more controlled with meds. I have epilepsy and a 4 month old puppy! (So was just wondering how she would react?!) But fortunately I only have a seizure every couple of years. I don't have any warnings beforehand either! Which if you did you could sit down etc x
Thanks yeah all i know is he licks my face and when i sleep it off he lies on top of my head lol. Yeah im 28 now it all came from no where 2 years ago and from then sometimes i get warnings but others i dont so glad sams here when my partners at work. Sam has gave me a new found confidence to go out alone which i would never have done last year. My partner says if im having one he praises him saying good boy when hes licking my face even our vet is amazed at how he reacts.
