Hi - have a 6 month old Labrador and have terrible problems with him digging holes in the garden! Can anyone suggest ways to stop this before my lawn is totally destroyed??

Hi @8904 there are several ways to prevent your pup digging in the garden. Most importantly is not to give your dog the opportunity to dig which means not allowing the pup in the garden by himself - ever! Accompany him on toilet trips and be ready to engage and distract if he shows any inclination to start digging. Also if he is alone in the garden, dogs as social animals, will seek activities to overcome boredom and digging is high on the list of boredom busting activities. Having toys in the garden to play with is not much fun if you don't have anyone to play with.

Another solution is to create a dog friendly digging area where he can dig to his heart's content for toys/chews etc that you have buried for him.

Another solution is to use cardboard boxes filled with screwed up paper in which again some treats/toys are buried that he can 'dig' to find.

    Welcome to the forum.

Some labs go through a diggity phase when they're pups and grow out of it. Jojo's advice is good and will help to discourage your pup. With luck he'll grow out of it.
