What's the best collar/lead for pulling?

    Hi there,
Rosie is 6 months now, she's lovely and her lead walking is coming on well. She's fine till she sees another person (getting betterish) or another dog (not getting better) and then she turns really goofy and launches herself.

I'm pregnant and finding it increasingly hard to keep her under control under launch situations so someone recommended a gentle collar. It's great, I love it. She can't pull and I can manage the occasional launch reasonably well. BUT she hates it. She looks forlorn when I put it on and spends a lot of the walk rubbing her face on the pavement to get it off (she's strong and it's hard to pull her up from doing this with a bump). Using treats and praise but after two weeks I'd say she's only marginally more tolerant of it.

Any ideas??? In a nutshell I love it and she hates it but it makes our walks possible while I'm carrying a bump too. She does also get plenty off lead time and her recall is about 80% so far work in progress.

Also how tight should ithe gentle lead be? Had conflicting advice on this.

Any advice extremely welcome as my fear is I'm not going to be able to walk her at all while I'm pregnant which would be a disaster.

    X

    Hi there, me again :)

Is she tolerant of a harness? My brother uses a front fastening harness on his Eurasia which is a spitz type dog. They've had great success with it, it means their young children can walk the dog without her hauling them over. Having walked her she'd be completely oblivious if she'd pulled one of them over she has very little on lead manners :)

    Hi!
No I haven't tried a harness. What kind does he use exactly? I only used the gentle lead on a recommendation - all the other mums have their dogs on them walking to school perfectly mannered and mine jumping about rubbing her nose like a lunatic ha ha.

I'm not sure of the make but it's basically a harness where the lead attaches in front of the dogs chest so as she pulls forward the harness turns her round and she ends up facing you.

This was discussed a little while ago, given these examples, I think it's just the case that some labradors just hate head collars:

    http://www.thelabradorsite.com/forums/index.php/topic,2527.msg25224.html#msg25224

(My Charlie hates all harnesses, and isn't over keen on a collar either - he is happiest on a slip lead, but that leads to no ID when he is off lead).

The front fastening harness is called just that in most pet stores. One of the most popular brands is called an easy walk harness. EG:

I have one, but have never used it because Charlie wouldn't leave the house in it ::) - but I think most dogs seem ok with them, a few people on the forum use them.

Jenny I'm on my second front fastening harness, the first was from Pets at Home, the one I'm on now is a proper sensation harness......Sensa harness ....it doesn't actually pull him right round when he pulls it just moves him to one side I think like a reminder to not do it,he does though,he needs constant management x

Yes Dexter I think that is a good point - that she still needs practice lead walking as the aids can mask a puller. I'll bear that in mind.

Got Rosie a no pull harness from petsathome. It's great - she's walking really well with it. Not as much control as the gentle lead as her head is free to lick and slobber folks but has a really calming effect on her. Hurrah!!!! (For now anyway...!)

Julie, we pretty much always use a slip lead but Riley has an id on a normal collar too just in case the worst happens. Does charlie only have id on his lead?

No, he wears a collar with ID and I use a slip lead - he still hates the collar though, and is happiest with just the slip lead but he only gets to have only a slip lead if we are just in the garden, or perhaps going to the postbox, something like that.

Julie, I found a collar a while ago when my two became entangled and almost choked each other on their standard collars , I think it would suit your Charlie as he doesn't like wearing a conventional one. If you would like the link PM me and I will gladly send it to you.

I'm told tomato ketchup gets rid of the smell! So far Bess has restricted her rolls to dead fish/birds at the sea - and then she is encouraged to go for a swim.
