Has anyone had first hand experience with Panosteitis?

I have a Male Lab 16 months which we think has Pano...He's on Rimadyl daily and I've just started him on Biochemist Tissue salts...He's had it for the best part of seven months. He was x-rayed and bloods taken early on and no apparent issues, just obviously he had painful back legs. I'm really interested to chat if someone has had their own experience with their pup. How long it ends up lasting...and maybe other natural remedies that worked...If he's not right by the time he's 18 months, we'll x-ray again. It hasn't eased up since it started, but he just knows his limits.

Hi Jane, I'm not familiar with this condition but I just wanted to welcome you to the forum :) I hope that you're able to share your experiences here with others who have managed the same thing in their dogs.

Hi there, sorry to hear this.

I thought I had heard this mentioned before and a search threw up a really helpful thread you might be interested in.
Started by @Luffy - not been on in a few months but the thread is here-

Also @Gunnar's mom mentioned a diagnosis of this previously - oddly a post with no replies (that doesn't happen often here.....)

Hope these may be of a little help.

Hi Angela...yes it was a limp and then it was crippling. He couldn't even walk to go to the toilet, we had to help him. Then it eased slightly, and now he has it in both back legs and it hasn't changed for the last 5 months. If we don't see any change when he is 18 months old, I'll get him X rayed again. Great forum!...and thanks for your interest...Jane xx

Oh how upsetting for it to happen to such a young dog ....it must be a challenge to keep him occupied when I guess you monitor his excercise carefully? He sounds like a sensible guy though if he doesn't push himself too far.In my reading about it ,it mentions it has usually run its course between 2-5 months with no lasting effects so sound like you've been unlucky .However it can last up to 18 and there still be no further incidences afterwards....I hope he recovers soon and you have your boy back to full health.Keep in touch with us here and let us know how he and you are doing x

So sorry to hear of this diagnosis for your boy. I haven't had a dog with Panosteitis but have known one boy diagnosed with it. In his case following a limping and restricted exercise bout at 7 months he was diagnosed at 8 months through x-rays. He had numerous recurring bouts of extreme pain in his hind legs, lesser in his front, until he was around 18 months old.
Panosteitis is more common in large breed dogs where it affects the 'heavy' bones in the legs. Although it can be really awful and depilation it does normally disappear around the 18 months mark as a dog reaches full size and finishes growing.

I hope your boy gets some respite very soon so he can start to enjoy life as a young dog should

Hi Jane. I am sorry to hear your boy has Pano but also relieved to find a Lab owner going through the same thing. Our ten month old girl, Oakley, has Pano and it is quite soul destroying. Oakley only has it in her front legs and it shift from one leg to the other. Each bout last between one and three weeks, we then have a couple of good weeks before shifting to the other leg! Apparently they grow out of it at approx 18 months of age (hopefully). I always know when Oakley is starting a bout of Pano as she becomes quite lethargic and sleeps a lot for 2/3 days before the limping begins. All classic symptoms. I'd never heard of Pano until Oakley began to show signs at 5 months of age. It's upsetting because you expect to be having long walks and adventures with a Lab pup of this age but, instead, we are limited to short walks and some days no walks. I do hope things improve for you and your boy......
