    Hi all!

I'm a newbie on here so hello everyone ;D

Im hoping someone on here will be able to help me (or maybe just sympathize lol :'( )We picked up our beautiful choc lab on saturday who is 8 weeks old and we've called him Ollie. I have to say, he is probably the perfect puppy in every way so far and he seems to have settled so well into our home..except the one teeny tiny little problem, apart from the lack of sleep and my current zombie like state.. I have never seen anything pee so much in my entire life!

He is doing pretty well in going outside to the toilet and on a puppy pad and will generally let us know when he needs to go. We also make sure we take him out after food, play and sleep and he will almost always relieve himself in the garden when we take him out which is all pretty positive. So heres the bad part...in between he does tiny little dribbles all over the house and im talking several every half hour! I cant keep up lol.

It does seem to be pretty clear in colour, im talking as clear as water..so im wondering if perhaps we are giving him too much water? He has milk and weetabix in the morning and a fresh bowl of water first thing, the water is left down all day and is regularly replaced with fresh (he drinks it all) he then has half a cup of water with his puppy food for lunch and dinner before his milk and weetabix again before bed.

How much water should I be giving him? Im worried that if I take it up and give him regular small and controlled amounts it may not be enough :-\

The vet wasnt worried about infection or anything else when I took him for his check up so im at a bit of a dead end really and swimming in pee :'( :'(

Hello and welcome from me and my two dogs :)
It sounds like he does drink a lot , good that your Vet isnt concerned about infections as this was my first thought . I would certainly ditch the weetabix and milk at bedtime, just give him his puppy food , is this a dry food you use ? Milk isnt always the best thing to give to pups or adult dogs , can upset some tums but if he is alright with it, just feed this for breakfast only and restrict fluids after 8ish in the evening .
Ollie is still just a baby and some have better bladder control than others , I`m sure he will improve as he gets as little older :)

Hi there, and welcome to the forum

Many puppies will wee every 15 to 20 minutes at certain times of the day, and in the first week or so that they are in their new homes. I presume this is just a case of really immature bladder. Or possibly an excitable pup failing to empty his bladder fully when outside. I have had several pups do it.

Provided the gaps between wees are getting gradually longer, and the puppy is bouncy and happy, if the vet says he is ok, then he probably is. :) Try not to worry about it, just put him out every 15 minutes or so, and cuddle or crate him for short periods to gradually stretch out the gaps between wees.

As far as water is concerned, you cannot give a puppy too much water. He will drink what he needs. You have probably been told by your breeder to give milk and weetabix, but nowadays this isn't considered good practice. Puppies are weaned from their mothers by around six weeks and don't need milk at all. Pups do best on either a commercial puppy food for all their meals, or a balanced raw meat diet. With unlimited water.

Hope that helps and that your 'wee watch' days are soon over :D

My sanity saver when Charlie was little was to keep him in the kitchen on a hard floor and keep the mop bucket out! It's difficult to make them understand not to go in the house if they have the full run of it at first, and impossible to get the smell out of carpets (so the dog can't smell it anyway).

    Thanks guys! ;D

Julie, I'm like a proud mum at the moment lol. Its nice to be able to talk with other people who I havent bored to death yet with my puppy talk :-X We have taken up all the rugs in the house so he is just on the hard flooring which does make it easier to spot and to mop up. At the mo we are keeping him in the kitchen where his crate is when we need to leave him alone temporarily and the front room/hallway when he comes out to play (we have an open plan house). Glad to know im not the only one though :)

I will keep his water down - Perhaps he will grow out of it and is just exciteable. He is ridiculously happy and excited right now and we are tending to spoil him a little to settle him into the home.

We have kept him on the weetabix for now as the breeder was doing this already and we didnt want to upset his routine and food too much as well as coming away from his mummy and siblings but we are looking to wean him off soon and stick to just a complete puppy food with a little tiny drop of olive oil which was what the vet has advised.

At night he is fairly good but he tends to cry when he wakes after about 4 hours and we arent sure if its because he wants to empty or because he's woken up and is missing us. The first few nights we was waking to let him out to wee and putting him straight back in his crate/the kitchen without uttering a word but he would carry on crying even more after we put him back. After a couple of nights he realised this and would wake us up just to play..we then started to just let him cry it out and ive now opened the door to the crate and put a baby gate on the kitchen door with a puppy pad on the floor which im not sure was the right move. He is still crying through the night but i know he is only a baby and still finding his feet and getting used to being away from his mummy

    Fingers crossed!

    Hi there!
    Welcome to the forum.
You sound a bit frazzled.....just like having a new baby ;D
It sounds like Ollie goes overnight for quite a bit without weeing? Might be that his excitable puppyness has lead to a bit of weakness in his wee bladder. I'm sure it will improve!
I'm not sure that letting him out his crate at night and using puppy pads will help with the house traing. I think the whole idea is that pup doesn't want to wee his bed so encourages the bladder control to develop. He won't think of the whole kitchen as his bed so this might not encourage the bladder control.
Lilly went through that phase of crying during the night too. Its really difficult to tell if its for a loo stop or just to play. Sometimes you just need to be really tough, but he is still just a wee chap.
