I hate it when there is something wrong with my digs and I hate it more when I think there might be. :(

Monday tea time when I got the dogs out of their pen one had been sick. The problem with having 2 dogs sharing is you don't know who th culprit is.

I put this digest upset down to over excitement and a big drink. My auntie called round just before I put them in their pen. They got very excited and had a big drink in the middle of the excitement.

The exact same thing happened yesterday but minus the water intake.

I could understand it on Monday the water being unsettled etc but not sure why yesterday.

They are fine afterwards and so far this morning ok although I will worry all day.

    Any ideas ?

    Worried Jen ???

Ah, sorry to hear that Jen - I always worry like mad too. I once took Charlie to the vet for what turned out to be a mosquito bite... :-[...

I can't help with the question, unfortunately, Charlie has only been sick for really obvious reasons (usually eating a indigestible stick ::) ).

    Hope you boy(s) are ok.

An even bigger source of worry than kids - at least they can talk!
Usually if they are behaving as normal then its probably not much to worry about.
But.....if they aren't themselves, or even if you need that reassurance, cos after all it is the weekend ;)........best get some vet advice.
For what its worth, Lilly is quite often sick, not always with a good clear explanation, but unless she is "just not herself", either light diet or chicken and rice soon sorts her out.
Comes with being a bit of a scavenger :(

    Thank you both.

They are both eating, drinking and being as nuts as usual. That's the problem I've nothing to go on really even if I took them to vet. Don't even know which one it was ! Let's face it dogs can be sick at the drop of a hat if something isn't sitting quite right in their tum. I know this I just have to convince myself. ::)

Yes, what do you tell the vet when the dog now seems fine?

A few weeks ago, I found myself saying to a vet "he had runny poo, and was really quiet last night and didn't even come to help us break up the cardboard boxes for the recycling, although this morning his poo was fine..." as the vet and I watched Charlie bounce round the room like a ping pong ball. The vet rolled his eyes...

    Been there Julie. ;D

Trouble is I think I panic more if I THINK there might be something wrong if I know for sure I know what to do.

I think I worry as well because about 18 months before he died my old dog vomited (I don't think this situation is the same at all ) and I knew he wasn't right. Went to vet who couldn't find anything wrong and vaguely mentioned a blood test although didn't think necessary. I insisted turned out he practically had liver failure.

A similar thing happened with these two and their bladder infection. I knew it wasn't right, kept going back until a sterile sample was taken and again last year they had campylobacter. The symptoms were intermittent diarrhea. Didn't last more the 48 hrs but every week so I took a sample asked for it to be sent off.

I guess I feel like I have to diagnose them and get paranoid in case I miss something even when there's nothing to miss.

Need to learn to chill out at least until I have a good reason to worry :D

I guess your previous experience has understandably increased your anxiety levels (aka paranoia ;D ).
It takes time to stop thinking every small thing is a prelude to something major.
You need to do what you feel right Jen, and your vets I am sure will understand. :)

    Re: Too excited ?

Jen , the Vet Julie was referring to ( rolling his eyes ) is my Vet that I recommended to Julie whilst she was in Cornwall for the summer . I know the rolling eyes look soooooooooo well , I took Sam because he was sneezing , then because he had spots under his chin and also to have his heart checked out because I thought he was too laid back ::)
But , I understand how you feel because I have lost dogs recently, it does raise anxiety and cause paranoid thoughts, but go with your gut instincts, if you feel that you need reasurring , then call the Vet and put your mind at ease ;)

    Re: Too excited ?

Thank you all so much it helps just to chat about it.

My family roll their eyes never mind the vet. My mum says if I have nothing to worry about I'll find something. She's probably right.

My sensible side takes over eventually and logic prevails its just that immediate stomach churning panic which with my paranoia lasts longer than it should. Approx 24 hrs by then I figure I will know if it's something to worry about or if I can stop worrying because nothing has developed.

Dogs can drive you mad but you can't help love them. ;D

Kate's vet is lovely. We are going back down to Cornwall before Christmas so he can take another look at Charlie's eyes (542 mile round trip to see a vet...good excuse for a long weekend). He did roll his eyes, but he also didn't care, I'm sure he'd rather see a few extra healthy dogs than a sick one too late.

Keep us posted on how your boys are doing Jen.

    PS. Kate
Do you remember me posting that Scott had had similar spots on his chin to Sam? Well Scott's are back.

He will insist on sticking his nose in everywhere. I wondered if it was an allergy but probably dirty follicles.
I know they will go away eventually so I don't have to worry about them I don't think ! ;)

Dont worry Jen ( says she who is paranoid !) Sams I`m sure are because he is quite a jowly slobbery dog , especially when training and excited, it just makes a breeding ground for bacteria , they seem to come ans go, almost overnight and yes Sam sticks his face in everything, just like Scott ;D

Ah Jen,instinct is a valuable thing, you know your dogs better than anyone,I hope they are ok today,im so slow reading and commenting at the mo x are you still with the same vet?
Julie...never mind the mosquito bite....When I was leaving for the airport I made CHRIS take dexter to the vet because of bumps on his head, when I KNEW he had stuck his head in a prickly bush...we got shot in the foot though because we got the irksome vet and Dexter ended up with a badly shaved head and the start of a vet phobia....... :( x

    Hi Angela
Yes I am with the same vet. Unfortunately the vet I really liked has left and it's a bit pot luck who you get. They have a lot of young temporary vets, rarely see the ame one twice and hard to get a appointment with boss vet who is very good.

So far so good though at the moment all seems ok.

Fingers crossed and don't speak to soon.

    Paranoid or what ;D ;D

Really, after I think of the £750 plus the London vets charged me to not sort out Charlie's ear for MONTHS, plus recommending he had a general anaesthetic, and the vet in Cornwall sorted it in 3 days and £40....have really lost confidence in these larger practices with a lot of junior vets....

    Re: Too excited ?

I know what you mean Julie.

I was very happy with my vet until about 5 years ago. They expanded in that they had a lot of different vets. Young and ones from Australia and New Zealand who would only be there about 6 months. The attitude seemed to change as well. The last couple of years of Murphy's life I wasn't very happy with them some mistakes made and the first couple of years of these two not much better. Unfortunately they are the only vets near. A new one has opened not far but that is just one vet so would be going from one extreme to another. Don't know how they would deal with a call out etc. The vet I would try to see who was very good and seemed to genuinely care has gone to a practice to far away so at the moment its a case of better the devil you know.

Having a vet you trust I think is very important it's good you found one but a shame he's in Cornwall. You will have to get a holiday home or something it's in Charlie's best interest ;D :D

I'm registered with 3 vets now...there seems no disadvantage to doing so, apart from that I keep detailed records of Charlie's treatment...

    Re: Too excited ?

I'm with 2 to be fair....my first choice is too far away ( the sitter I use doesn't drive)and in a really heavy industrial area of town but they are excellent.my second is local and I LOVE,LOVE,LOVE the vet I see but it's a 3 vet practice and one of them is dreadful .He was on duty last week when we needed to see someone out of hours so we drove to the first choice to avoid him.....there is a lot of trial and error involved,I feel like I have been lucky so far, fingers crossed ::)
