Hello from Alaska

This is my first time owning a dog of my own. In the past I have always owned cats, but my two 20 year old kitties passed away last year. My husband works out of town and I wanted to have some company in the house so I now have a chocolate lab puppy named Tillie. She is 6 months old and a real handful! She loves the snow, which we have gotten a lot of this year. She loves to jump around and burrow into the snow piles. I was not aware that labs liked the cold, but Tillie seems to like to go out on the porch and just sit in the fresh air even if it's below zero. I am looking forward to reading more in the forums about training, because I'm having some trouble with it and I'm getting a little frustrated.

What a big change for you from Cats to a Lab ,I'm sure there have been a few shocks along the way but the rewards way outweigh them.
Have a look through the Puppy and Training Boards and feel reassured xxx It's not nice when you are facing challenges with your dog but it helps to read that it's normal and you aren't alone,not to mention all the great advice that is there as well x

Hi Leslie, how lovely that you have your first dog and a Lab aswell. They are great dogs, Cassie is my first lab. Although I've had dogs through my life there was this Lab spaced gap that needed filling, so here she is, 11 months old now.
I'm sure you will find the help and information you need on this forum, I know I have.
We have had no snow this winter in my part of UK. I'm so disappointed she hasn't seen any yet.

 

Angela, thank you! It is quite a shock from cats to a lab. I am finding a lot of good information though. I think I'm going to purchase Total Recall to work with her on coming when she's called. Right now that is one of the worst things about Tillie.

 

Hi, you are correct about there being a lot of good information on this site. My daughter, who has a chocolate lab also, was the one who recommended this site. It is good to have some place to vent if I need to about Tillie's lack of manners.

 

We have had so much snow this winter that I'm wondering if it will ever go away and when it does what Tillie is going to do without snow to root around in. Ha, ha!

 

When I figure out how to do that, I will certainly post some snowy pictures. I better get at it before the snow is gone.

 

Hello there Leslie & Tillie from Coco & me on the Isle of Man. Coco is a (nearly) 3 year old German Shepherd x Labrador. We got him when he was 16 month old. Training has been a hard slog, but it is very rewarding and fun.

Hi! I have always had cats and had toyed with getting a dog off an on for years but wasn't in the right position to have one. I do now and I find her much more demanding than any cat I have had. There a lots of positives: I walk A LOT; I have met lots of people - we only know each other's dog' names, not our names but I have lots of conversations every day (being out walking 2/3 times a day). Chepi and I have lots of cuddles so I think I agree that having a lab is good company. Also, there's a whole new genre of shopping available! I named my dog Chepi as it is a Native American name (Chesapeake Bay Area), meaning "fairy". Can't be that far from Alaska?

 

Hi Leslie, from Monty and my 3 yr old Monty.
I was just thinking about the snow and cold the other day - Monty has loads of joint problems and everyone says 'ooh, he must feel the cold / get stiff' - but this never ever seems to be an issue. Though by cold, i guess I mean England cold, just mildly chilly and grey. Compared to what you have! Yet the sun comes out, and he's pretty rubbish - anything over 20 degrees C saps his energy and he completely overheats. Funny dogs.... good luck with the recall training, it's a tricky one to master. I haven't yet!!
