So Aramis had an upset stomach last night, didn't think much of it because we had tried a new treat, then this morning he had a loose stool again and I've just taken him out and pink/brown water came out, followed by a little more blood. Completely terrified, have rang vets and he's booked in for 11:15, and god I feel like worst puppy mum ever
Oh please don't feel bad , you have acted quickly and responsibly , good luck at the Vets , let us know please x
Thank you both, god I never knew puppies would do this to you. I feel like I did when I first came home with my son. He's very quiet which is so scary as usually he's like a ball of energy! He ate fine this morning and drank , so I'm holding on to that .
Don't panic. Fresh red blood indicates it's come from the last bit of the gut, which, if there's blood, is the better option rather than old, clotted blood. He might've strained a bit. The vet will surely put your mind at rest. Let us know how you get on.
Going to the vet is absolutely the right thing but don't panic - he'll end up being fine. My dog Obi had a similar thing last weekend - he was pooping quite a lot of blood and would not eat or drink. The vet gave him antibiotics, painkillers and anti-nausea drugs. Pretty soon after that he wanted to eat and drink again. He had a poached chicken and rice diet for a few days and is now totally fine. The vet said it was probably something he ate that upset the bacterial balance in his gut. It's nothing you've done wrong. Hope all goes well at the vet's.
Ahh thank you all, honestly I was terrified, but your right the vet visit has reassured me. We have stool samples to collect from 3 different stools to drop back in tomorrow or saturday, and they will test those there so results shouldn't be too long in coming. We've been given some Pro-Kolin to add to his new chicken/rice diet twice a day, his temp was normal , she said he's suffering from no discomfort when she felt his abdomen, and as he used her hand as a chew toy, and tried rooting in my bag for treats I had brought to show her(the ones I had tried him on) she wasn't overly concerned. She said she's inclined to think if tests come back clear that where we finished a 3day worming course Sunday, and some appeared randomly this morning before the blood episode when he had been clear for a few days that it could be to do with that. Just a case of wait, and see now, but it is reassuring to know they are only a five min drive away, and being a animal hospital are open 24 hours . Again thank you for your responses, this forum is honestly a god send for a first time puppy mum !
What a relief for you ! Prokolin is magic , it will help to firm him up and also help with any pain associated although it sounds like he isn't too upset ! Fingers crossed that it was the worms , and he is bouncing back real soon x
He's crashed in his crate now , dreaming away as his little paws are going at it, and he's making those little yappy dream barks they do so yeah if we stay like this my nerves might survive lol
Well we've had another load of basically water , but this time thankfully brown though the smell was horrendous. I'm just glad no blood.
Oh bless him - hope he is is back to normal soon - and yes puppies were put into our lives to drive us mad
Pro kolin worked fantastically for Harley. I also put her on a diet of boiled chicken and rice whenever she had an upset tummy and it really helped. Fingers crossed he gets better soon
Your spot on he had the 2nd pro kolin dose earlier with his tea, and his following movement though very loose still had at least some form. I've had to spoon feed him the rice and chicken because we found with his lunch he dived right into it and clogged the roof of his mouth with the rice, and basically had what seemed like a temper tantrum because he couldn't fit any more in
We had this for the first 2 months with storm. Had to do chicken and rice, pro kolin and had to do the 3 x poo collections 3 times. It was draining. For storm it turned out to be giardia and campylobacter. Took ages to clear! I hadn't realised how sensitive a lab tummy can be. Good luck xx
Funnily enough vet called with first lot of results back today (still waiting on others) , and like you we have giardia too. And , I have no idea where he could have got it, as he has never left our garden , and we have been so careful with him. We have 3 weeks worth of the worming stuff he was on last weekend 13ml once a day then new poo samples. However, he is already so much brighter , if it wasn't for the runny toilets you wouldn't know anything was wrong.
Pleased to hear that he is loads better in himself x It is ironic that Labs , who will literally eat anything, often suffer from sensitive tums , hopefully he is well on the mend now
Our first results revealed giardia, second revealed the campylobacter. Hopefully just the guardian as I understand campylobacter is harder to get rid. Good luck
I'm an awful puppy mum because I cannot for the life of me spell what it is the second results found , but it is an infection, and begins with a C. We picked up a 12 day twice daily course of antibiotics Friday morn (99% certain it's banana medicine we had as kids) , it's meant to be 14 day course, but because he has his 2nd set of jabs what would have been the last day of the course she shortened it to 12. He's doing amazing though for a little thing on two lots of daily meds, toilets are pretty much back to normal, and he has discovered his voice which started off as extremely cute, but now is less so lol
