Re: Charlie is a french street urchin! Unless this has changed very recently, this applies to full champions, not show champions. A show champion (as you would see at Crufts) is given the title SH CH on their pedigree. Just like a Field Trial Champion is given the title FT CH. Currently, show champions do not have to have displayed any working ability at all. Unlike Full Champions If your dog has any full champions in its pedigree they will simply be CH (which kind of looks less impressive, but it means that they have passed a certificate as described above. ) Not very many successful show dogs (in the UK at least) are full champions, and I don't think any Crufts BOB winners this year were holders of working certificates. I do seem to remember that Ireland may have different rules. Pippa

Re: Charlie is a french street urchin!
How dare you call the lovely Charlie an urchin - he can write you know ;D ;D Helen x
;D I think he is quite urchin like though, particularly given his fondness for fox poo! Pippa - you are right, of course, I probably wasn't listening carefully enough to the trainer - and all this show, full, dual, field, stuff is a bit double dutch to me - although the info was in the middle of quite a loooong story about a woman doing a show working dog cert who didn't want her posh show pooch in the back of a landrover - prompted by the trainer's view of Charlie's purple padded space in mine! ;D ;D so I might have lost concentration for a bit!
Re: Charlie is a french street urchin! I found this article quite interesting: http://www.woodmistlabradors.co.uk/working_labrador_j_venturi_rose.pdf It gives an interesting commentary on each section of the Standard, from a 'form follows function' perspective e.g. why does the Standard say that cheeks should not be fleshy, and that shoulders should be sloping, and that ribs should be well sprung? The article describes the purpose of these characteristics and more from a functional perspective. Anyway, I found it to be a worthwhile read I found the article on a breeder's website - 'Woodmist Labradors' - (not the author of the article) when I was scouting around: http://www.woodmistlabradors.co.uk/ I also recommend having a look at this website as the breeder has some fabulous photos in her galleries of her dogs and pups (she is a photographer too). Lots of her dogs at work on shoots too (e.g. http://www.woodmistlabradors.co.uk/woodmist%20saffron_working_gallery.html) Her dogs are lovely. I would have one of them in a flash ;D
Re: Charlie is a french street urchin! Those are beautiful dogs!! It's interesting....I keep trying to see the Lab/Newfie traits in Simba, but it's hard as I really don't have much experience with either breed. Based on those pictures, Simba definitely has longer legs, and a longer body, and a longer tail, which he holds higher and more curved up at times. His head is pretty Labby, though, I think!!

Will have a read later, travelling this morning, very interested in the standards now - and would love to understand what's for function, and what is just for looks. Thanks so much!
Re: Charlie is a french street urchin! Lovely photos from Woodmist quite a lot of dual champions in her dogs pedigree.
Re: Charlie is a french street urchin! Here is another very interesting article by the same author on dual purpose dogs. http://www.thelabradorretrieverclub.com/articles/jvrosedualpurpose.htm
Re: Charlie is a french street urchin! I've now read these articles - thank you so much, it's really sparked my interest. Although now must stop looking at Charlie thinking "does that shoulder slope enough?" ;D ;D ;D. One thing that did strike me, as I looked around the websites of the dogs mentioned, is the hip scores of some of the working dogs (although some are dead now, so these scores might be historic). They seem really high to me. This is the exact opposite of what I would have expected. Here is a picture of the dog that the article mentions "Oakingham Monarch of Leospring (Ch Marfell Seafarer x Oakingham Heidi Noon) is the only current Labrador in the UK to have awards in open field trials and to have won breed classes in the championship show ring." (He is no long alive now). OakinghamMonarch by JulieTandCharlie, on Flickr
