We went out of town two weeks ago and left our 10 month old chocolate lab with a sitter who has been watching her since she was 4 months old. When I went to pick her up, the sitter said she destroyed 4 pairs of shoes and was chewing on the legs of their patio furniture. She loves her chew toys but she has never chewed anything in the house! She was always such an angel. Before this incident, she had only destroyed one pair of our shoes. A week after we picked her up, she vomited 5x throughout the day. It was only a small amount and was mostly chewed up kibble. The fifth time she threw up 2 pieces of fabric that were ~6 inches long. I'm not exactly sure what it was but the material seemed like it was a part of a leash or collar. She has been acting normal since then (eating the same, no vomiting). The only thing that has changed is her bowel movements. She used to poop at least 2x per day and now she is only pooping in the AM. She goes to a daycare during the day so it is possible that she is pooping there but she always used to poop at night when we took her out before bed. I'm wondering if maybe she has a partial obstruction that is limiting how much she can go? My husband is a physician and isn't concerned because she has no other symptoms but I'm worried we could be ignoring something serious. Has anyone had a similar experience?
If everything else, eating, pooing, drinking, playing etc - is normal then, hopefully she'll be OK. If you are at all in doubt go to the vet's. We had exactly the same at daycare - it was Tatze's first time of eating something which wasn't food. I think she was stressed by something. She ate her harness. The carer said she'd 'chewed up' her harness. I didn't know she'd eaten it until she pooped it up A word of warning - since then Tatze has had a 'taste' for anything made of collar/lead/harness material. We now have to really watch her and keep all leads etc well out of the way. .
If proper, normally formed poos are coming out then there isn't a blockage. Do the poos look normal? Can you check with the daycare to see if she's pooping during the day? (They won't think it's an odd question ) I agree with Boogie - if she's eating, drinking, pooping and has a normal energy level etc then she's probably fine. But it's never the wrong decision to go to the vet if you have any doubts. It's better than worrying, and if you get told that there's absolutely no problem then that's still worth the cost if it puts your mind at rest.
No harm in popping her to the vet for him to have a feel to see if there is a partial block, would put your mind at rest.
