Welcome to the forum Rae. I called my dog Fred because my OH want to call him Messi, after the footballer. Our vet always calls out the dogs name followed by your surname. There was no way I was going to sit in the waiting room, waiting to be called Messi .......... I just want a short name to call him. When we got Annie. Everyone in the family put a name in the hat and we picked one out. Tom is a lovely name.
Whatever you choose, you will probably end up with a ridiculous set of cutesy nicknames that you call the pup too and some just stick whether you like them or not! My Indie was called that when we adopted her, but early on we started to refer to her as 'the Pig' as a joke because it felt like we had let a snorting gobbling farmyard animal in our house! Now it has stuck as a term of endearment and I realised that me and my husband no longer refer to her as Indie - it's 'have you fed the Pig yet?' 'The Pig wants to go out' so now she is Piggo, Tiny Pig, Pigletina, Piggy-wig, Pig-Pig, Bobblepig...yes, we are mad.
Homer is Homer Simpson, funny when people get the joke even funnier when they've known us for a while and only get it much later. Hubby named him one night in the pub! The name stuck. Now we have a long list of what number two will be called, I'd like to go brown the Greek route. There's a dog we meet called 'Dog'
I've already decided when we get another it's going to be a golden girl called Daphne OH says he hopes my puppy name choices don't reflect my children's names choices
I can sort of see why, very small roly-poly lab puppies are rather Plum like allsoft and squishy with, but with legs
Rocco sound good, also Tom -- how different to have a dog not a cat named Tom. My puppies mother is called Tia Maria, Cassie is short for Cassis on the drink based theme and being blackcurrant based (black lab). She has a sister called Sherry.
It does sound like madness doesn't it, we do the same thing. My lab is most often called one of the following: The Barger, Bargie, The Buns, Bun Bun, or Bubbuh. My OH's face gets so mortified when I refer to him by any of these names outside of the house, which I do, of course...
I like the name Tom. Our older dog - a black lab - had already been named Paige when we got her - we didn't like it so she was 'no name' for a week. Then one day, we were walking her and the sky was black so we decided to call her Sky.
I love this! You're so right about the nicknames/terms of endearment. My Plum has so many and they all get used. She answers to most of them too .
I remember doing the name in a hat thing as a kid when we got our second black lab bitch. The vote was unanimous for Ebony and as soon as the decision was made I decided it was going to be Jodie, despite voting for Ebony! Now I think Ebony is beautiful.
Do you need a registered name too? What are the parents names? Sometimes a breeder has a theme they like you to follow. ONe breeder we looked at (English Springer Spaniels) had a Gone With The Wind theme, based on the dam being Scarlett. I had Gable all ready to go but we didn't get an ESS. Since then I've heard of two other male dogs named that. You can make your own theme up. Colour (Oban actually relates to colour but it's a long story) geography, football, music, there are lots of options. Anybody remember the site often mentionned on Champdogs that has thousands of names? And their meanings?
Yup nicknames are great - Bailey is often called (by me) Bales, Boo or stinkybutt - and he responds to them as well as his name
