I gave our 9 week old puppy worming tablets this afternoon and since 8 pm she is very tired, has hiccups and less thirsty. Is this normal? I'm beginning to worry!
If you are concerned you can ring your vet. Even if they are closed there will be an emergency number you can ring for help
Thank you, I didn't realise our Vets had a 24 hour call line. I called them and they said normal side effects, & to see how she is in the morning. I was still concerned through the night, but she slept it off and is fine now.
For the first three applications of Bailey's flea and worming stuff (liquid that is put on the back of his neck) he was off colour each time - slept more than usual, was off his food etc and it usually took 24/48 hours until he was back to his bouncy self. I mentioned it to the vet and they said normal side effects, but if he keeps having this reaction they would have to change the stuff. After the fourth application (one a month) he was less and less affected - now he looks forward to it as he gets treats while I put it on the back of his neck!
I would be hugely concerned about negative side effects of a dewormer. Snowie had a terrible reaction to Milbemax. I know many dogs don't. But he did so I'll never use it again. He first started scratching. Then swollen eyes. Then a seizure a few hours later. We changed the dewormer to Mediworm, which thankfully hasn't caused any bad reaction. You're giving your dog a poison to kill parasites. It is a poison so you should be concerned about what it can do to your dog and discuss this with your vet. You should be trying to find the safest anti-parasite regime for your dog, which might require trying a different product.
