Hi, We collected our new little puppy the weekend, his 8 weeks. But he really smells, the whole house smells really strong of dog. Firstly is this normal for such a little puppy? Secondly does anyone have any recommendations how to remove the smell? Thank You

    Is it a skunky smell?

My pups always smelled of a sort of coffee bean / burnt biscuit scent , which I loved . Any unpleasant smell would be better reported to a Vet rather than trying to get rid of it yourself, good luck and welcome !

The first 3 days, ours did the most terrible farts. So thick, you could cut them with a knife. The smelled seemed to cling to everything, including him. I nearly changed his name to "Chemical Ali". But it settled down after that and he just smelled of "puppy", which for me isn't as strong as "dog", and actually quite a pleasant smell.

I think it can take a puppy a few days to settle in, give him plenty of fresh air (outside in the wind seems to help us).

What are you feeding him BTW?

Honestly, the smell of Ella as a puppy was so wonderful it ALMOST makes me want another puppy! If what you're smelling isn't pleasant then I'd recommend a vet visit to make sure everything is OK.

    Welcome by the way :hi:

Just wash him in warm, plain water - no shampoo. You could also put a little Simple Solution on a cloth and wipe him with it. Some pups get weed on by their litter mates and smell of wee. The gorgeous smell of new pup will soon come through.

    :D

And welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Mollie from Manchester UK :hi:

Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's four years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German.

Mollie is my fourth Guide Dog puppy, a black Lab who is seven months old.

Thank you so much for your reply's and help everyone, its much appreciated. I am calling the vet's today to book his vaccinations so will ask for their advice. Snowy we are feeding him Eukanuba, this is what the breeder was feeding him so we have carried it on. Thank you again xx

Hi and welcome! I must say I thought my pup smelt a bit odd when we first got him... It took several days for him to lose that strange smell and to start to smell like 'my' puppy...

Hattie stunk too, I bathed her in just water and it faded quickly. I think coming from a litter of 11 puppies she was bound to stink!! :D x

All the pups I have had that lovely puppy smell, I was so sad when it eventually went. Maybe the breeder didn't keep the area where they were very clean?

Hi Stacia, I've only been to the breeders house twice but it was clean and tidy. x

Harley smelt a bit when we first got her. I gave her a quick rinse and it got rid of the smell. I think it was from being in an enclosed area with her litter mates.

    P.s. Welcome to the forum.

Hi and welcome from me and my boy Bailey - a fox red lab - Bailey had a funky smell about him when we picked him up but I just gave him a wipe with a damp cloth and plenty of fresh air (handy as we seemed to spend almost every waking moment outside for wee's that first couple of days until we had sussed his signals out. After that it was puppy smell all the way until after his second lot of vaccinations and he discovered the joys of rolling in fox poo :puke:
