Our absolutely adorable 12 week old puppy has started to tip over her mason cash ceramic water bowl. It's a mite annoying, plus she then has no water for her own comfort! Is this a phase she would grow out? Or is it time to upgrade to a larger bowl (from current bowl that is 15 cm to a larger ceramic bowl that is 20 cm - which, by the way, looks enormous!). I'm grateful for any suggestions
Hehe, Luna was a monster for this! And, if she couldn't tip it over, she'd dig in it. So, to be honest, the size and weight of the water bowl was of no consequence. So, she ended up without free access to water; I just had to ensure I offered it to her frequently throughout the day. She's a very thirsty girl, so this meant every half hour or so. One more of the joys of puppyhood! She's grown out of it now (7 months), and never digs in the large bowl I leave out (the 20cm Mason Cash bowl), but I'm sure if she'd had that as a young puppy, she'd still have dug in it. Moreso, she'd have practiced the behaviour and it might have stuck. I don't like ay of my dogs practicing undesirable behaviours, because they can become habit. Similarly with her food bowl - if left unattended, she'd throw this around once she'd finished eating. It was loud and irritating, so I had to make sure I picked it up as soon as she'd finished (when using a bowl, that is - I often don't). Now, she just doesn't bother messing with it anymore.

They don't tip over, but if the pup manages to grab the edge, the water doesn't spill out. You can put it in the car with water already in it, no need to fiddle around with bottles of water.
Stanley used to do this - it drove me mad!! One day he just stopped and hasn't done it for a long time now. Now we just get his slavver chops dripping water everywhere after he's had a drink
Merlin does it - and then lies down in the puddle and goes to sleep! I have removed his water bowl from the kitchen floor and put it outside (the door is open all day) until he grows out of it!
Not so sure about growing out of it... Homer will still put his front paws into his water bowl to splash the water out all over the kitchen floor. At 5 years old he'll do it less often than he used to and generally only when he's excited, hot, or wanting attention. Needless to say we haven't been as conscientious about unwanted behaviour as Snowbunny. We even put up with the clattering of metal bowls for three years before changing to Mason ceramic ones.
Oh, the noise of metal bowls drives me batty (ok, batty-er!). I have lovely Hunter bowls which are melamine with a metal insert. Recently, when I use the bowls, I've been putting just the metal inserts on the concrete or gravel outside to help with Willow's noise phobias. I dunno about her, but it sets my teeth right on edge! I couldn't put up with it for three years!!
Thinking about it ... Homer's noise phobia started when we stopped using the metal bowls! A clatter like that in the street will send him running straight home but in the kitchen he's fine.
Bella was exactly the same , for the first few months she thought it was hugely entertaining to dig in her water bowl then suddenly she stopped ........ only thing is now , as I have mentioned before , whenever she has had a drink she HAS to find someone to lick ...it's hilarious as you know its coming .....you hear the splash of her lapping at her water and then this waggy tailed dribbling monster appears , water streaming from her mouth looking around for the closest bare flesh she can find to lick ....and the look of pure unadulterated bliss on her face as she is licking is a joy to behold .
I got one of these for my late great Brogan. He refused to stick his big nose into to drink, ever. I think he thought his nose would get stuck. Plus I couldn't figure out how to clean it or even get the old water out. I finally gave it to a friend of mine, with the original water I'd put in it STILL in it, a month later. Yuck. She was delighted, was able to figure it out to clean, and her (smaller) dogs didn't get their noses stuck in it. Somewhere I saw a bowl that came with a heavy magnetised mat and the idea was that the bowl stuck to the mat and the dog couldn't pick it up. But wouldn't stop them from digging in the bowl. Personally I've never had a dog that dug in his water bowl. Kinda looking forward to the show.
Sorry but Rory has his very own extra large water bowl for digging in . He loves it i just after a hot walk. Straight in digging the water out then drinking by sticking his nose in up to his eyes and sucking. he enjoys it its in the garden and is just a fun way to keep him cool. It makes him happy.
I used to put the Mason bowl inside a bigger metal bowl with a rubber bottom and that stopped the antics!
Rocky has been doing this since around 10 weeks. Puts his paw in the bowl and tips it up. Then runs around the house with bowl in his mouth and chases is on the kitchen floor. Have decided to change to big heavy bowl so he can't tip it over.

Ahhhh Bailey is not the only one that likes to lick bare skin after drinking!!! I just thought he was an oddball! He occasionally tips his bowl over but that is more just by being clumsy than intent - we were at a café this lunch time sitting outside in the sunshine and had put a bowl of water in the shade for him - he decides to lay down and managed to catch his paw on the edge, tipping it up and all over him and my feet! Gave us a laugh anyway!
Huckabee still does this at 7 months. I can't leave water down in the house and the one outside he tips over as soon as he is finished drinking. I hope he grows out of it. I think I will try putting a small bowl in a larger bowl like someone suggested.
