My puppy ate a snail.

    I treated her with Advocate on 27th May and today she ate a snail before I could get it off her. Will she be covered? I'm a bit worried.

    Hi there

    I think you really need to have a chat with your vet who will be more aware of the risks of snail eating in your area and whether the recent application of Advocate will have given adequate protection. Please let us know how you and Puppy get on.

    Don't worry, he will be fine :) Eating snails is a bit of a puppy thing that they grow out of.

    Snails carry lungworm but Advocate covers that with a monthly dose. If you only applied it a few days ago he'll be fine - the Advocate will cover him for a month.

    Do try to prevent him from eating snails though, just in case the snails have been in contact with any snail bait.

    I sympathise - my boy Pongo went through a phase of eating snails when he was little. I tried to get them off him but he was usually too quick. He was fine; I know that there can be problems but I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.
    It did make me realise I absolutely had to stop using snail/slug killer pellets on my garden.

    Thanks all, I will check with the vet. She was just so quick, I'll be more vigilant from now on. She eats everything!

    Homer was a nightmare with snails as a young pup. I'd go out every evening to pick them out of the garden and he'd still find more the next morning. I put out beer traps (jars filled with beer which attract the snails and they fall in) I turned my back on him just for a moment and he'd tipped over the jar and was drinking the beer!

    Doug used to do that apparently snail and slug marinated in beer a really good. Beer was nice too. So funny. I had to stop doing it in the end. We now have hedgehogs:)

    Wait, what? Eating snails is bad? Every restaurant in town here has signs proclaiming the snails have arrived! And that's for humans.

    Yeesh, the things I learn about here on the forum!:tmi:

    I'm hoping the snails in the restaurants are slightly less rare than the ones slithering around on the floor :D

    I don't actually know - I've not tried them. Not brave enough! I guess I kind of thought they were served raw like oysters? But you're right, they are probably "a la plancha" like all the yummy seafood (which I most certainly DO try).

    But OK, I'll add "RAW snails have nasty diseases" to my Forum knowledge along with all the other bits and bobs. :)

    You've never had snails?! I have no idea how they do them in Andalusia, but Catalan snails are delish! Far smaller and less overcooked than Bourgogne snails, often done a la plancha (on a metal tray) or al horno, and usually with lots of bacon. Yummers.

    I'm pretty sure y'all have better food up there in the north! Down here it's fish, fish and more fish...which is indeed wonderful (and salmorejo, which I could live off of). But everything else pretty much comes floating in olive oil and is a bit suspicious. Even my Spanish friends say, "Don't mess with the other tapas, stick with the fish and gazpacho!"

    Nope, I've never been brave enough to try snails. And that's with several years in France behind me as well. The garlic sauce on them always smells great, but eating the things that my mother used to wage a year-round war on in her garden in California. Um...well...OK...I'm a wimp! :p

    Hehe! French snails are generally just a bit disappointing. The only thing good about them is the garlic butter, but the snail itself is normally just like a bit of rubber. The Spanish do them faaaaar better; they retain a softer texture and the smoky, earthy flavours they put with them really complement them, rather than smothering them. Watch me get pounced on by the Francophiles, now :D

    A good salmorejo is absolutely divine! You have me hankering for my local tapas bar in Soldeu, run by a friend from Cadiz. It's the first place I ever tasted it and it was delicious!

    I love southern tapas; it's so different from what we generally have in Cataluña. You have that amazing espinacas con garbanzos down there. When I was last in Seville, I ate at least three tapas of that a day! :D
