Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Hi there and welcome to the forum. Does he suffer from separation anxiety?
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Oh gosh, this is also happening to us with our 11.5 month old bitch Aggie, thought we were the only one's. Aggie gets a walk before we go to work to do her business and a very long walk when i come home, we do put puppy pads down just to minimise the mess.. more wee than poops...she was doing well but seems to gone backwards. :-\ She was crated but only went in there to sleep and to escape if need be...we do have a 5 yr Bichon Frise and we have no problem with him at all..any tips etc would be appreciated. I do sympathise with the person who wrote the post....maybe we can help eachother with tips etc!!!!!!
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained I also have been worried about housetraining, Otis at six months, did his first poo on the lead yesterday, which was a breakthrough. I think what I have found is that allthough Otis is still weeing in the house about four times a day, it has got better. You have to try and get into a routine with your dog, so that he goes out after meals, or and half an hour afterwards, as eating stimulates the digestive system, also Otis tends to tank up on water, so I know to put him out straight after. Its not easy though, I cant seem to do any long task, and know that i will have a dry floor afterward, as I need to put Oatsy out. Im also not convinced that giving a treat is such a good idea, alhtough Im no expert, but I think as labs are so happy to please us, that they may strain to do a poo just to get the treat, this is just my opinion though. Obviously though the main thing is, clean up the mess, without any fuss at all, and praise profusely when they go outside. Hope this helps, Maggie
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained I have a great deal of sympathy for these problems!!! Unfortunately I don't have a lot of advice to help as the last time I trained a puppy was a looonngg time ago. There are many on the forum who have just got through this with their dogs, so hopefully you will get some help. Certainly by this age your dog is capable of understanding that the house is not the place to do his/her toilet business. I know that dogs will normally not use their "bed" as a toilet, so if he is going in the crate perhaps it is too big?? The puppy pads tend to prolong the housetraining as they do send a mixed message. I imagine a process of weaning the dog off those would be in order. Perhaps someone else has done that and can give some suggestions. Sorry I'm not much help - hopefully someone else can give you more specifics!
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Hello and welcome to the forum I think that when you have a bad behviour problem established , the best route to take is right back to basics and begin housetraining all over again, as you would do with a puppy . This is far easier than trying to correct behaviour as clearly , the dogs simply dont understand what they are doing and need direction . So , as with a puppy, outside every 30 mins or so , have a trigger word such as Toilet, or Wee and use this word when they perform, then loads and loads of praise . It may seem silly to be taking the puppy route but I do think its the better way . I also agree with Lisa re the puppy pads , frankly they give out the wrong signals entirely . By using them, you are giving permission to your dog to wee or poo indoors , so that they then have to learn all over again not to do this , so ditch the pads or paper . You can buy a product which will deep clean the smell of urine and poo , so start by having a really thorough clean of the area where the dog toilets and then start from scratch , outside often , straight after a nap or food . Also when out with the dogs , when they stop to wee or poo, use that trigger word , they will soon realise and make a connection , good luck
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Great advice so far thanks to all... The problem i have is that i am out at work for a few hours so would you say that once she is walked before i go to work i should confine her to a enclosed space ie the kitchen where we have ceramic tiles (so easy to clean) and not to put down anything and hope that she can hold herself long enough? :-\ Thanks again
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained An 11.5 month old dog should easily be able to hold on for a few hours without a problem, but the dog will only take the trouble to hold on if s/he thinks that the house is definitely not for peeing in. Style, how long is your dog used to being crated for? Is she ok with being in there for a few hours (if she sees the crate as positive then a few hours while you are at work should be ok if she has had a big walk beforehand.....). It might be a useful tool if you are going to ditch the puppy pads and 'go back to basics' as Kate has described (I totally agree with her advice). A few hours is the max I'd leave a dog in a crate though and only if the dog is able to settle quietly in the crate.
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Hi Rachel, Aggie has been crated since we had her at 10 weeks and we have recently sold it as it was only used for sleeping / retreating to if need be..she was never shut in it apart from when i was washing the floor as she used to attack the mop and she hated being locked in so it was then we decided to get rid of it. I am out of the house approx 4/5 hours a day so would of hated to shut her in her crate for that length of time.. we will be removing the puppy pads and have made her last walk later than normal..removed her water bowl during the night.. so with all these things in place hopefully we should see some dryness soon.... not sure what else we can do.. we know its something we have done ie with the puppy pads giving mixed signals etc but any more tips would be great. jacquie
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Hi I could only repeat what Kate has suggested really. The difficulty will be when you are at work and I'm not sure how you can get around that unless you have a neighbour/friend/relative who could go and let her out. My dogs have always had a kennel and penoutdoors. They have slept and been in their pen if I'm out from day one so that solved the problem of house training while I was out. When in the house I would without fail take them out after sleep, excitement and food. This method has so far always worked I've never used pads etc. They stopped toileting in their pen by about 6 months their choice I certainly didn't train that but I'm glad. ;D Start from scratch as if a pup. Good luck Jen
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Agree completely with Kate, train from puppy stage. Also, you ask should you confine to the ceramic floor when you're at work. Yes, I'd say confinement is key. A small space so the dog can move but will have the bed in there & water. They can hold it and won't like to mess when they've to walk about in it, so should then wait till you're home. I'd expect a few accidents during the training but I'd hope these would be of the wet and not solid variety!
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Chloe is just 7 months, all summer she has been great, all wees and poos outside, as door has been open, so she took herself out. Now the nights are drawing in and the door is closed, she came into the living room, next to kitchen which has a lino floor, and weed in the middle of the carpet in front of us, she has not cottoned on to telling us and we did not think of it.Also at bedtime every night she goes out wees and sometimes poos and all clear until morning, thelast two nights she has pooed and weed on the carpet again, even though I stayed out twenty minutes last night and nothing, she knows what do a wee wee means, and usually obliges. Our carpet which was a good one smelled of amonia and made us feel ill, could not get rid of it even with electric carpet shampooer, so today cost us £150 for carpet, not a large room, and we pray she will not continue with this. She can hold wee and today did not go until 5pm, from this morning, we are retired and do not leave her in the house yet as she can be destructive, not bad after reading some posts on here, but still need to watch her. She cured herself from stealing from worktop, as she got down her paw got stuck in the drawer handle, I was there and was very quick to get it out but she has not done it since!!! ;D She seems to be going backwards after being so good and doing so well, since the first accident have made a big effort to get her out more often, but suppose if she does not want to go, she doesn't, does two poo a day, but last night nothing and it came in thenight. Wemust have gone wrong somewhere , trying to get her to woof to go out, but nothing so far, our last lab never woofed to go out only to come in, but she just went to the door and we let her out, Has anyone else had this problem. New carpet coming Wednesday on floorboards until then. Will be interesting to see what happens tonight, will take her out again and stay as long as possible but it is not as warm as it has been. We do not know why she has used the carpet when there is lino in next room, we do not have a crate. So glad we have these forums to read. Val
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained
Chloe is just 7 months, all summer she has been great, all wees and poos outside, as door has been open, so she took herself out. Now the nights are drawing in and the door is closed, she came into the living room, next to kitchen which has a lino floor, and weed in the middle of the carpet in front of us, she has not cottoned on to telling us and we did not think of it.
I wonder if this might be the problem? If she has just tended to go outside (because that's where she usually goes, and dogs tend to go where they have been before), just leaving the door open probably isn't very effective in terms of toilet training. She could just as easily develop a habit of going inside when the door is closed. Sounds like maybe go back to the beginning - taxi to an outside toilet area, always go with her, rewards for going outside etc.
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Update from earlier... We removed the puppy pads and low and behold over night and i do mean it literally Aggie held herself at night and during the day and a week later she is doing so well....so the problem was definitely us and not her we was giving her mixed signals with the pads, luckily we have ceramic tiles so easy to wash if needed but so far so good!!!! YAY.FINALLY So dont despair im sure it will come good in the end ;D
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Whoop! Whoop! Well done both of you ;D
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Absolutely great!!! Well done.
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained Hi please to report Chloe not done anything on new carpet, does a wee at bedtime and holds till morning, and we know she wants to wee around one to two pm, so let her out. Trying to get her to bark to go out, and say wee wee, she does bark but we do not think she has cottoned on to why :-\ This evening she actually went into kitchen and stood there, I knew she wanted to go out, but she did not stand at the door. She is coming up to eight months and in last few days is making big strides, curing some bad habits and the hours spent trying to sort her out is paying off, however, still does not come when called, that is the next challenge. She does come in from the garden if there is food on offer, but does not come in for nothing!!!! Hmmmm. Thanks for all the feedback, most welcome and appreciated.
Re: Can anyone help my lab is 11 months and still not house trained I have trained In a year's time all this will seem a distant memory - like sleepless nights with a baby. Well done on the progress!
