... when people keep asking me what breed my Poppy is!!! Just because she's fine boned and is a slightly different colour than most labs and yes she does have a long nose and doesnt look like your average cuddly bumbling labrador puppy... To be honest she is a bit funny looking, even to me. I love her to pieces, but she is definitely different, both in looks and character, than my other labs were. Still, I feel quite hurt that people dont recognize her for what she is! :( I feel like whipping her pedigree out of my pocket and waving it under their noses, saying 'look, she's got a pedigree longer than your own!!!'. Harumph.

Not that I carry a copy of her pedigree in my pocket, you understand. Dog treats, whistle, lead - yes. But no pedigree. Yet. ;D

Yup - same here. She's got short legs for a Lab as well as a pointy nose so that prompts more questions. On the upside on the first shoot I took Lady on when she was just over 2 years old, two people approached me independently and asked to go on the waiting list if she ever had pups. ;D

Aww Karen, dont let them get to you , I get exactly the same with Sam, he weighs 34 kilos at just a year old but is long legged and slim , good shaped but slim face and long ears which I adore :) Wouldnt it just be boring if they all looked the same, different colours but exactly the same comformation :)

He sounds lovely - and quite a big boy as well! I must try and work out how to post photos on here, and would love to see more photos of other people's dogs. I've posted a couple of photos on the facebook site though.

I know how you feel. I have been asked "what is it?" on several occasions. And once "is it one of those Hungarian things?" ::)

I've had that too - at Barney when I first got him - (in fairness we too thought he was a cross - he was so thin at the back end and so fast we thought he was part greyhound, but not any more ;D and Rusty due to his colouring) dont' take it personally - it's lack of knowledge that's all.

Yep I get it too. Because my two aren't the chunky, block headed sorts most commonly seen around here, a lot of people think they are a cross. I can sort of understand the confusion with Labs though, as there are so many different types and often you would think the extreme ends (chunky vs athletic) are different breeds. What I don't understand is when people ask me what my Poodles are . I mean, they couldn't look more like Poodles if they tried. ???

Well, thank you everybody for the replies, that's made me feel a lot better to know this is a common occurrence.

Pippa, by 'Hungarian things' I take it they meant a visla? I can see where that confusion would come from. My old dog was a brittany spaniel / lab cross. He was a lovely chocolate colour with yellow eyes and a beautiful shiny coat, and people often thought he was either a visla or else a small weimaraner...

Carole, you are right, people arent meaning to be rude, they really just dont know. I'll look on it as my personal quest to educate this part of the world about working strain labs!! And not get upset about it any more. :D

Do let it worry you. People used to ask 'what is it?' about our pedigree springer pup too. Not sure what else they thought he could be! Some people just don't know their dogs...

My little rescue terrier Flynn brings about the same reaction , he has got JRT in him and, we think , some Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier which would make sense as they are bred primarily in Ireland where Flynn came from . Some people though are just downright rude , " What is it " indeed  I usually shut them up by keeping a straight face and replying " He is a pedigree Tipperary Terrier " :)

Do your poodles like to retrieve Jules? In the US quite a few poodles are worked as retrievers, just curious.

The youngest one, Twoee, is a keen retriever. She thinks nothing of retrieving articles virtually the same size as herself either. The older one, Pood, will retrieve when the mood takes her, but she really enjoys tracking/hunting, especially rabbits and squirrels. She Points as well, at birds mostly. She is a Confused Pood. ;D
