I'm not a clicker trainer but I had a similar experience with Riley I told him good boy when he assumed the correct position at my side and off he'd go again. I think he was treating my good boy like a release command and he thought he'd done what I wanted. So I started taking a step before I said good boy and then two, three etc I'm sure you get the picture :) this improved his heel walking no end!

I'm a "continuous clicker" type of clicker user. Whether this is normal, I don't know. But when teaching walking to heel, Charlie would get a click for 2 paces, 4 paces, 10, 20, 30 etc. If we had a difficulty, we'd sit down and start again, 2, 4, 10...eventually we were at 30, 40, 50, and then eventually he forgot about the click and treats and would just walk. I don't know if that helps, NHM, good luck!

Julie I tried the paces approach today we got to about 10 & then had to drop down to 6 & then she did really well on the way back but I think she knows she had to make up for eating something undesirable whilst we were out! & I even had smoked sausage for her!

That's really good! If she has the idea, you'll soon see some progress. I was stuck at 4 paces for what seemed like forever, then I got up to 30, and went back down to 2 while passing dogs, solved that, got high numbers again, went back down when we changed locations.... It's slow progress, but seems to work in the end.
