help. What's happened? I trimmed his dew claw a couple of weeks back but I just noticed this https://imgur.com/gallery/lcyey
He's ripped his claw off to reveal the quick. Ouchies. It will shrivel away and a new nail will grow back, but until then, you need to keep it clean and dry.
Thank you. I had no idea how to do it. Today he's been rolling in mud. Lots and lots of mud!!!! I'd show you but I have no idea how. Should I bandage it up?
Also, why has he done this? We had to give up the cat the other day and he hasn't seemed like himself since
When this happened to my girl (on a different nail), I kept it covered on walks (Pawz rubber boots are best for this, which are like balloons which go over the foot) and then washed in a betadine solution when we got home. I doubt he's done it on purpose! It probably happened on a walk.
I wrapped it up and he started limping so I've taken the bandage off and he's walking fine. He let me squeeze it before you told me what it was and he didn't seem bothered. He just seems dead sulky poor thing. He never tells me anything when he gets hurt. Stubborn bugger!!
My Willow is a complete drama queen (context: she ran up to me squealing one time when she got tree sap on her bum ) but when she ripped her nail off, she didn't make a noise. It was only because it was snowy and, after running around for a while, it looked like someone had murdered a small child, that I actually noticed. It seemed to get sore after a day or two. Yes, she limped, too, when I taped it up to go on walks, which is why I would recommend the Pawz boots for that. They seem to mind those a lot less, after the initial shake to try and get it off, and a few strange looks at it.
I'll give that a go when I get my car back from the garage tomorrow. Oh, the other thing, he really really stinks after that mud bath he had. I've bathed him and used a puppy shampoo which I never ever do but I just had to try something. Any ideas?
Was it "special" mud? Might need something like Animology Fox Poo shampoo. Available from Pets at Home or Amazon and many petshops.
*snigger*. Sorry, but that looks baaaaaaad! Definitely in need of a shower after that! Cowboy Magic do a Greenspot remover, which is a dry shampoo... obviously in this case a proper bath was unavoidable, but the Cowboy Magic works on fox poo, so might just work on the lingering smell here, too?
My OH said he looks like he needs a long and muddy walk so when he hopped in there, I just let him get on with it. He was so so so so happy.
He seems okay. Not eating his food straight up but eating it after a bit of pretending like he doesn't want it. He's had his chew all day though and just keeps moving it around the house. I think he's just behaving weird because he's in pain. I feel awful because this could have happened days ago (when the strange behaviour started) and I didn't know. Not that there seems much that I can do about it. Poor thing. I really appreciate your thoughts and advice though. Thank you
