So Toby is 9 weeks now. He's so sweet by the way. Pretty gentle with his teeth so not overly teethy at all. Very thankful. So he's a very good, laid back puppy. We are enjoying him so much. He, however, does not like to cuddle or sleep next to anyone. I'll sit with him in his play pen or even lay on the ginormous dog bed most times he is wanting to sleep (started this from day 1 so he would feel safe and not alone). But every time he moves away from me and lays in the farthest corner. He keeps moving about every 1-2 minutes and then finally settles in. He does like to squish between the wall and dog bed but not cuddled with me. Am I doing anything wrong? Is this just personality? Have others experienced this? I am petting and stroking his back off and on. Thanks
I think, like people, every pup is different. Some like to be cuddled, others not so much. He is experiencing so much at the moment that he might be a bit overwhelmed with all the new experiences that are coming his way. Give him time, he may change and become a cuddle monkey, but then again he may not. However, you will be his human, you will be the one that he comes to, you will be the one that he looks at as his safe place. Your bond with him will not be any the less than someone that has a dog that loves cuddles. Well that's what I think anyway.
No, he is very very young and settling in, finding his way. You will see a big change in him over the next few months. I would say it's a good thing that he finds his own place to settle and sleep.
Some pups love a snuggle, some don't. Tatze doesn't but she does like to snooze with her head on my lap. Mollie is a cuddle bum and will snuggle any time any place .
As others have said every dog is different and some like cuddles more than others, they just are what they are . My puppy wasn't cuddly at all, but at 16 months is getting more affectionate which is lovely because it seems more special really. She still doesn't like her head being stroked but there is a spot between her ear and neck that she just loves being rubbed. I do chuckle to myself when I read about dogs that cuddle up to their people on the sofa, if Miss Cassie gets on the sofa with me it's to encourage me to move so she can stretch out on the bit I've been sitting on I agree with @Samantha Jones, you will be his special human whether he's cuddly or not.
I wanted a big dog that would cuddle. Didn't get one! I think Snowie feels too hot so he might come close for a minute and then moves off to somewhere cooler. Perhaps in colder weather your pup will want to cuddle more. Snowie also like to wedge himself against the wall. We have old clay walls with lots of moisture - very cool - so I'm guessing he's cooling himself. Snowie is very attached, however - follows me everywhere. Yes, everywhere! You will probably discover you will never use the toilet alone!
My puppy is the same way! He is 15 weeks and hates snuggling. He used to come lay in my lap and play when he was about 8 weeks and would sometimes fall asleep on my leg or lap but hasn't done something like that in weeks. I think he would much rather lay on our cool laminate or linoleum than snuggle. He's also much more interested in playing than snuggling I am hoping that when he gets older he will enjoy snuggling because I wanted a snuggle bug! My sister in law's lab is about 9 months and he enjoys snuggling. Maybe they just need time to grow out of their puppy-ness!
I do not think it is down to anything that you are doing. Pippa will do the same thing most of the time. Find a cool spot on the floor, normally in a corner somewhere, and then have her nap. My wife gets upset by this and goes to give her a cuddle and a kiss but then she'll just move to another area. She is getting better, she's asleep under my feet at the moment and she does love to have her belly rubbed. ( Pippa, not my wife ) Give him some time to settle in and I'm sure he'll become more affectionate.
Sam isn't cuddly , at all , never has been but its just how he is and that's that ! Every so often , he will lay his head on my lap, whilst he is next to me on the sofa , and very occasionally he will lay a front leg over me too , and that's as far as it goes ! Nelly, on the other hand , would be cuddled all day , all so very different x
Cooper sleeps on the bed and sits on the couch with us. Tilly lies on the floor or her dog bed. Ginger was kind of in between. They are all different, even though they have that basic Lab personality.
Axel hated snuggling with me as a puppy, which made me sad. He would want to sleep at my feet but didn't like to snuggle. Thankfully that changed around 8 months and now is the snuggle king
