I'm sure the vet gets it right for Jasper, Lynne.
Hope you aren't worrying about it now.

Yeah, I just do what the vet tells me too :D Basically I just asked them to advise me on a worming regime that involved effective products, coverage of all major parasites in this area and relatively low frequency of dosing (otherwise I forget and miss doses).

Good to know that heartworm isn't such an issue in the UK :)

I'm not at all sure - it's on my list of things to check with the vet.

    Re: Confused by worming tablets.

I popped Charlie's urine sample into the vet's yesterday and while I was there asked them to look up what wormers he needed next. I was expecting to have to give him something at 9 months (this month). He finished his puppy worming (drontal) at six months. They said he doesn't need anything until January when he'll be 11 months.

He gets advocate every 4 weeks, but I still think that means he is without protection for roundworm and tapeworm? I was going to ask about Milbemax - can't check on the website what the frequency of the dose should be (the website is down). But from your posts here, it's every 3 months?

Now I wonder if I've got confused...and I'm careful to check all the packets. Obviously will have to try harder!

I've ordered a worm testing kit from http://www.wormcount.com/...

It is confusing Julie, I wish one of the manufacturers could make a wormer that kills all known worms, that would make life so much easier.
I am taking Hattie for her booster next week I will be asking worming questions ::)

Hope there's nothing nasty in Choc Charlies' wee sample :( By the way how did you manage to catch his wee?? x

    Re: Confused by worming tablets.

This is on my list to read up on...Dexter was due to be wormed the week of his first tail op.....the vet said to leave it until he had finished his antibiotics as it might upset his tum .....they do make him a bit loose ::)
Anyway as the tail recup was longer than we expected and his antibiotic treatment continued he was actually 3 weeks late being wormed. This was worrying me,our vet told me not to worry as the worm medication doesn't cover them for the full period between treatments anyway,it will work on the day you give it but then protection reduces as time goes on and it's really a prevention treatment to stop a major parasitic infestation?
......I feel irresponsible now on this subject as I haven't asked them the name of the drug...I just give him the 2 tablets :-[...all the kerffufle over the inaccurate blood rest results last week resulted in the vet giving me the worm tablets free of charge so I need to go through dexters file now and see if I can find an old invoice with a name on....on the upside I have never seen any evidence of worms and I worm him every 3 months...this is something that everyone seems to do differently though?I can remember Lynne saying she wormed Jasper every month.....

Advocate is once every 4 weeks, yes. I think that's what Lynne was talking about.

Oh yes! I got distracted that morning by work so didn't get round to calling the vet until just after 12.30pm. They said to get a sample to them by 1pm so it could go off to the lab that day.

Given the choice, Charlie wees on my lavender plants - I don't let him normally, but in the interests of getting the sample quickly I thought I'd sacrifice a small bush. So I waited until he started and shoved a clean roasting tin on top of the lavender bush! Charlie immediately stopped weeing and looked horrified. But I reckoned I got enough. Few lavender bits in it, but hope that's ok. ::)

Found a clean jam jar but no lid! And time ticking on....so just legged it down the (busy shopping) road to the vet's trying not to spill the pee out of the open jam jar...got some funny looks...

    Anyway, results on Wednesday.

    Re: Confused by worming tablets.

Angela, the frequency of worming depends on the tablet. Milbemax is every 3 months but some kinds are monthly. What your vet said about worming is exactly right. It's just a regular thing to prevent a really big build up. I worm every 3 months with Milbemax. We have heartworm here so we do an annual heartworm injection also. We do Advantix if we're going to a tick area (they aren't a problem where I live but they are a problem on the coast).

Julie, Advocate does fleas, heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, ear mites, mange mites and lice. That is a pretty good list. But it doesn't tapeworm. For tapeworm you need a tablet with Praziquantel in it. Advocate plus a tapeworm treatment (if it's an issue in your area) is a good combo I think.

No one treatment covers everything..... And not all locations have problems with all parasites.

We use monthly advocate plus a tapeworm treatment and Riley wears a tick collar.

My vet sends me a text reminder for everything except replacing the collar in the spring :)

Thanks Rachael and Barbara - that information is very helpful.

I'll have a good chat with the vet on Wednesday - I don't understand why Charlie doesn't need at least a tapeworm treatment until January. The advocate was originally prescribed because of a worry about lungworm, but that was in addition to the drontal he was already taking, then the ear mite protection of advocate became very important. Then advantix was added for ticks and sand fleas (a problem on some particular beaches in Cornwall) ... think I need to get it sorted into a sensible list I understand.

Yes, Charlie wouldn't do that... ::) ::) he'd scratch more than if he had a bloomin' tick!

We went with a collar as they're (apparently) safe for children and it meant one less spot treatment when we have to be really careful with Lizzie hugging him(her new favourite thing). Also we have deer in the woods where we walk and the woods are full of ticks. A spaniel friend picked 30 odd ticks of her 4 dogs one day!!! (they're on the IoW and don't have ticks)

You usually see when an animal has tape worms as the segments cling to the back end like little grains of rice. Dogs/cats get tapeworms from fleas, eating rabbits or mice (and possibly uncooked pork, don't really know about that!).
