We have a golden Labrador puppy who is now 4 months old and we keep having problems with diarrhoea with blood streaks in. She has had treatment for every worm and been on antibiotics and the vet put us on royal canin gastro intestinal junior food which worked instantly for about a week but now it's back worse because she's even up during the night with diarrhoea and still streaks of blood in. She has a tendency for eating everything in the garden so we are letting her out less and keeping an eye on her but she tries to eat anything. we have even caught her trying to eat a slug. the next step now is giving a sample for the vet to send away. We keep hoping it's something she's eating but can't stop worrying!! Has anyone else had similar problems?
I had the diarrhoea problem with my puppy. Not the blood streaks but plenty of diarrhoea. It is extremely upsetting and a worry. My puppy also eats everything although it is less than it was. I did manage to stop her from eating a wasp yesterday!! I never let her in the garden unsupervised. I seemed to live at the Vets at one point earlier this year. They tested a stool sample for various things but that was clear. She had a special diet for weeks and I thought I'd never be able to transition her. Even now we are very careful with what she eats. I am hoping as she gets older (she is now 9 months), her digestive system gets stronger. I find pro kolin very good and now keep a supply of it. You will feel better getting a sample checked.
If you are seeing red blood it can be from a small injury near the exit point of her anus, but inside. You say she eats anything in the garden, sticks too? And of course other stuff in the garden could cause diarrohea. Could you be exceptionnaly diligent about watchingher== there foe a, ewell, always, andsee it this clearns up?
Thank you. We have decided to send samples off now for peace of mind so hopefully it's nothing serious. Because the diarrhoea comes and goes we think it's probably things she is eating but better to be safe than sorry
My girl had this on and off for months as a pup. If it's quite a bright red it is probably from the straining / diorrhea. It's amazing how sensitive their tummies are. I gave her boiled rice (left in mulchy liquid) and boiled chicken for a few days and this helped settle her tum. We found out she had an allergy to wheat and some other grains but took ages to get to this point. Hope all goes well at the vets
Hi thank you yes it is quite bright red in a sort of mucus but not all the time. At the moment the blood seems to have stopped but she still has diarrhoea since last Thursday. We get to send it off to the lab tomorrow as the vet wants 3 days worth. We are so hoping it comes back normal and she's just being a Labrador but we are watching her so closely I can't understand what it is she's eating. We keep trying to take her for walks instead of the garden but she can't seem to grasp that's for doing her toilet and she waits till she gets home and wants to do it in the garden The good thing is she has no other signs of being poorly. She's happy and plays and has her nutty moments and she's not off her food which we changed a couple of weeks ago to gastro intestinal food which worked perfectly for a while until this latest lot of diarrhoea. Just a waiting game now.
I recently had a similar issue with my puppy, now 12 weeks old. Diarrhea for 2 weeks, awake at least 4 times a night with stools full of mucus. The vet suggested based on the symptoms, there was an inflammation of the large intestine either due to parasite/bacteria or a food intolerance. We began a course of antibiotics and within 12 hours we were back to normal stools. It was quite frustrating, since everything else was fine health wise (no vomiting, healthy appetite, full of energy). So glad we started the antibiotics, though just be careful sometimes the parasites don't always show up in stool samples, probably why your vet wants 3 days worth. Good luck, let us know how you go.
