Resource guarding is when a dog protects something. Usually food but can extend to toys, bones a person or even a location. It usually starts with a growl but can escalate quickly to a bite if the offender doesn't back off immediately.
The first signal a dog will give is 'freeze' but as most humans miss this signal the dog will growl before escalating on to snap and bite
Going back to your opening post about puppies and toddlers - here's a visual of some of the sweet moments of what putting puppies and babies together looks like. Moments like this makes the training and the work and time worth it. This is my puppy with my toddler.

I missed the freeze until the very second I read your post. Thinking back, He froze in a particular stance and tossed a look before growling.

Hmmm toss up! I think the puppy had the most wins. My toddler doesn't move quite as fast as the puppy.
