We've recently changed our six month old puppy's food. We've been doing it gradually over the past couple of days as advised by our vet. However she is still having some diarrhoea. She's alright in herself and is still loving her walks and playing but we have noticed that she is sleeping a bit more than usual. We put her food out this morning but she wouldn't eat it no matter how many times I tried to entice her too. She hasnt eaten anything today as of yet. Could anyone help me as to what I can do to get rid of the diarrhoea? Should I feed her still or leave her stomach to settle down? I read some things on the internet which suggest to feed her rice or boiled chicken to get her tummy back to normal. Any suggestions?
Homer had quite a bit of tummy trouble around six months old. I think that tummy trouble With puppies is quite common? Homer was on boiled rice and chicken on and off for a while. The vet gave us some probiotic pate and we changed to a lamb based kibble which finally got his tummy more settled.
Chicken was the thing that made Rory tummy worse so once we ditched chicken he was a lot better. His colitis is well controlled now. There are plenty of foods out there now with no chicken so hes well.
My puppy now 9 months has had a lot of digestive upsets. I use Pro Kolin twice a day when she has diarrhoea. She is very lethargic when these upsets happen which can be distressing. I avoid anything chicken based as I think that was a culprit but I suppose I'll never know unless I try her with it which I am not prepared to risk. For a while she had a prescription diet which was wonderful but very expensive and not particularly long term. However with our 10 year old Lab we have always given her chicken and rice when she has had diarrhoea and this has always done the trick. I hope your puppy has eaten now and the diarrhoea stopped. I also hope she is drinking lots of water so she doesn't get dehydrated.
I prefer white fish mixed with rice. Many dogs ae sensitive to chicken so I play safe. If the puppy is still suffering I would phone the vet for a chat as there are other possible causes. I would question the new food though as a possible culprit if there were no tummy problems before.
