Hi all We have had our 8 week old yellow lab home now for 2 days. In the evening we put her in her pen and leave her in front room downstairs and we go off to bed upstairs. She cries through out the night eventually stops for around an hour and is off again, last night I came downstairs completely ignored her but laid in the front room on the sofa and she was silent, Do you think this is the way forward?? Spending my nights in the front room with her? The pen is to big for our bedroom Thanks in advance!
Yep that's what I do. I lie by the crate/pen then as they get happier move to the sofa and eventually back up stairs to bed. It usually takes from a few days to a few weeks depending on the puppy. Some people have a crate or bed in the bedroom and that works too.
Hi there and welcome! Yes, I agree with @SwampDonkey . In your place, I'd either sleep downstairs with her or buy a cheapie small crate that she will outgrow but that for now that you can fit into your bedroom and keep keep her next to you. It's just too much of a shock for many puppies to go from littermates and mom to being completely alone in a new place.
Yup agree with the comments above. Your pup has just left his mum, littermates, and is in a strange place with strange things, and people. It is a tough time for them. We usually take turns sleeping downstairs for a few nights to help pup settle into his new surroundings. We use a crate and make this a super cosy and great place to be...feeding his meals, treats and toys in there. We then get ourselves comfy, cover the crate slightly, and try to get a bit of sleep ourselves. There is a great little book you may find useful called the Happy Puppy Handbook. You can find this on Amazon. Hi and welcome. I agree with the advice above. She's used to having her mum and litter mates around her and is suddenly alone. I expect it's quite scary and she will reassurance that she is safe, but that's not something that happens instantly.
