Hi. My 13 week old lab is pretty much clean when he's in his own room. He lets me know when he wants to go out to the garden, which is close to where he spends most of his day (with me). When I go to the kitchen I take him with me but it's quite far away from the door, and up some stairs and he seems to just use it like he does the garden, without attempting to let me know when he needs to toilet. How can I extend he clean area to include the rest of the house rather than him thinking the rule just applies to his room? Thx in advance.
In my experience, I just took my pup out frequently, she never had a good sign and we had a lot of accidents, but as time went on she figured out to hold it and that outside was the bathroom. I think it just takes time you will notice less and less accidents everywhere as he figures it out. 13 weeks is very young and I wouldn't expect them to be particularly potty trained by then. So if he's warning you in some locations that young I'd take that as a win.
Hi Alison. You just need to keep taking your pup outside every half hour or so and give him a lot of praise and treats for going out there. In time, he will naturally come to see the whole house as his den to keep clean, but until then, and until his bladder has matured, it's a case of being vigilant and pro-active. Most pups aren't 100% until they are around 6 months old.
Hi Alison - I can only echo what has been said above - just keep taking your pup outside every half an hour. My boy seemed to crack early on that his toilet area was outside, but that was only at home - if we were at my mum's or anywhere else we had to be very vigilant and whisk him outside quite regularly as he didn't think of other places as his den.
