I think it can be really hard for new puppy owners to know when to seek veterinary advice. This is a quote from 'The Right Start' that new puppy owners might find helpful "A healthy puppy should be full of energy and bounce. He should be able to walk normally at all times, eat hungrily, drink regularly, empty his bladder and bowels regularly and be free from sickness or diahorrea. His eyes and ears should be clean and bright and he should smell delicious. For the first two or three weeks he will sleep deeply and often but when he is awake he should be alert and happy. Contact your vet without delay if your puppy seems listless, won’t eat, has persistent diarhorrea, is sick more than once within 48 hours, or twice in a week. Call your vet if your puppy swallows anything you think may harm him, cries for no apparent reason or in an unusual way, drags one of his limbs or seems to be limping, or has a discharge from any part of his body. Call your vet if your puppy cuts himself, falls badly, or just seems generally off colour. If in doubt, call your vet." Sorry me again Just reading this thread. Rolo does sleep often etc which I think is normal for a puppy however he isn't the bounciest or most playful once he wakes up. The odd time he will look enthused but other than than that he sits and watches us and doesn't engage in play much then finallygoes back asleep, he is eating fine. Is this normal and he could just Be a slow learner
Hi, I am a new member and collected my puppy yesterday. Huckle is 8 weeks old and seemed to have a bit of an upset tummy when in the car o the way home (the journey was 2 hours) I thought this may be down to traveling, he was going every 1-2 hours with runny poo but was still eating and drinking so thought may just be down to having a traumatic day. This morning Huckle is still drinking but ate very little and his diarrhea is now watery, should I take him to the vets? He was also wormed the day before we collected him.
Please call your vet immediately. It could be a reaction to the worming, but you don't want to mess about with tiny puppies and diarrhea.
Hi I got in touch with my vet and am happy to say that Huckle is full of beans, eating, drinking and his tummy is on the mend ☺️
We got our new puppy on Wednesday today is Sunday. She is 9 weeks old. Has diarrhoea but not runny more soft and she didn't eat her breakfast. She is very sleepy and seems low. She is due her next feed in an hour. Should i call the vet? She is drinking water?
Only just seen this. Did she eat her next meal? If she has refused two meals in a row I think I’d phone the vet for advice. I hope she’s OK.
Thank you for replying so quickly. No she hasn't eaten at all so I took her in. She is not too bad. Not dehydrated or temperature. We have to see how she goes overnight and see tomorrow. Just got some diarrhoea treatment and a jab. I wondered can I give the puppy chicken and rice or scrambled egg or is it best to stick to kibble?
Yes, just give her a little chicken and rice, but make sure that she is drinking regularly too. I hope she's better soon.
I got her to eat some boiled chicken and rice and she has picked up this evening. Thank you so much for the advice. First week with a new puppy is full of worries let alone a poorly pup. She has enjoyed her extra cuddles today.
