Hi.. my 9 week old puppy will not stop biting me. He will latch on to my calves or bite on my hands and feet really hard. I’ve tried the method where you yelp really loud and then ignore him but he won’t let go. I’ve even tried distracting with chew toys and then putting him in the crate but he continues to bite hard. It gets very difficult to calm him down. I have to pick him up and put him on my lap to get him to stop biting. I don’t really want to encourage that. What can I do to get him to stop biting? I understand that it’s his version of play but it’s very painful

Why not put him on your lap with a chew toy in your hand? I love this - and it doesn't last long - Lab pups are soon too big!

He continues to bite when I put him down. Had to crate him finally to let him mellow out. Somehow he listens to other people when they tell him to stop biting.

With Bailey I found yelping just excited him more. I was a case of being consistent - I was lucky in that he didn't bite my legs or feet (just my butt once!) I withdrew attention for a couple of seconds until he calmed down, then reengaged, if he continued then into his crate to calm down. But this did take months until he got it fully - it got less and less gradually but it really is a case of being more persistent than your pup I'm afraid.

I tried to withdraw attention but he kept on attacking my ankles. He’s actually started to bite other people ankles too now. Crating is the only way to calm him, but as soon as he is out, he starts all over again.

I wore leather boots when my puppy was little all the time and told people to keep their shoes on when they visited. It doesn’t last.

I pick them up when they start ankle biting, if you do it every time they soon learn (don't forget to have a chew toy in your hand - I keep several in my pockets until they are past the crocapup stage)

He really will grow out of it in time. Molly drew blood daily for a few weeks but grew up to be gentle.
I found large cardboard boxes helped distract her during the worst periods each day. (My OH called it happy hour in the evening -two bites for the price of one! See I’ve forgotten how painful it was and so will you. Time to grit your teeth.)
