Kalia is 12 weeks old and has always had a lot of poos during the late evening/night hours. We did change her food slowly as they were once too soft, and now they are harder, still not great.
    • Food-Taste of the Wild Venison & Bison Puppy (switched from Blue Buffalo Puppy), 3 times a day
    • Last feeding 5-6 pm
    • Poo-three to five times between 8pm and 4am (start normal consistency and get softer each time)
    • Poo once or twice during the day (normal consistency)
    • Vet says she's eating an adequate amount and gaining at a healthy pace
    Thank you :)

You may be feeding her too much, the amount on the packet is usually far more than they need. Try reducing the quantity by a little and see if her poos firm up.

5-6 is maybe a little early for a last feed at 12 weeks ? If I remember right , at this age, my pups were on a schedule of 7-11-3ish-7/8 p.m. Just thinking that a later last meal might stay in her system a little longer overnight ?

Sunshineb75, I know how you feel! I'm having the same problem with my puppy Alex. For the past few days he has been pooping around five to six times a day, and at night/early hours in the morning he seems to be going two to three times!
I stopped introducing new food, and have put him back on the food the breeder gave him: Eukanuba puppy large breed. He also seems to have much less than the guideline recommendations.

Alex's poop is not bad in the morning, not exactly firm, but not exactly sloppy. Then in the evening his poop goes soft like pudding, and looks to have mucus in it. He was doing well this morning, then it softened up again and he pooped three times in around three hours. The good news thoughts that he is still himself, and he's still eating and drinking and there's no blood or watery poop, and no vomiting. I would say that he eats two thirds of what the guideline says. I tried him on boiled rice, even added a little water to make it softer but he doesn't like it. I last fed him at 7:20 pm.

Thank you all for your input! I will definitely try less and also try to wait until later to feed in the evening.

Kalia was having very loose stools with the breeder's food (cheap, store brand) and we slowly introduced the Blue Buffalo and still had loose stools a couple weeks later. Then we slowly switched to the Taste of the Wild, thinking maybe chicken was the culprit, and her stools are much better, but still a lot in the evening and night.

Our feeding schedule is 8am 11am 3:30pm 8pm for pups up to 14 weeks then 8am 12:30pm 8pm up to six months. They are always fed less than it says on the packet.

I've had five pups so far and they have had good firm poos and always held it over night.

Hi, just wondering how you went with your Pup? I'm having the exact same problem with my pup at the moment and came across this thread. My girl is has great poos throughout the day but then just get worse, with more frequent toilet trips through the night, I was up 5 times last night. Aside from this she's well, good energy levels, growing and an absolute darling. Any advice or tips?

Hi Sybil's Mum, Alex is doing much better now, thank you. He still poops a fair bit, but it's spread over the day now. I have put him on Skinners Field and Trial puppy, and this seems to be agreeing with him much better, and his fur is softer and he's developing beautifully. I don't think the wheat in his old food agreed with him.

I was very worried about his nightly poops, but as he was well in himself I didn't bother going to the vets and waited it out.

The only things I can suggest, is try some food without wheat, and try to give a little less than it says on the food labels. That is what we did, and it seemed to help Alex's bottom. Of course, if you find that your puppy has diarrhoea for more than two days in a row, and/or is being sick take your puppy to the vets to make sure nothing unpleasant is going on. Keep your puppy well hydrated, I kept leading Alex to his water bowl after he pooped.

Puppies with excessive poops can be frustrating, we still go through bouts of it with Alex, but it's not as bad now. I hope that your girl's bowels settle down, and I'm sure that they will, please keep us updated. :)

Do you do snacks or treats between? Like carrots, green beans, etc...

So, we went to the Vet yesterday for Sybil's second vaccinations, even though her tummy was still upset. Probiotics didn't work as advised from them previously, and her sloppy poops were not improving; progressively getting worse (full of mucus) at night.

Based on the symptoms she said it was either the large intestine inflamed due to a parasites/bacteria or a food intolerance. She gave me 2 options of either conducting a number of stool tests to see what was wrong or skipping the tests and putting her on a mild antibiotic (Flagyl) which would fix the problem if it was bacteria/parasite related. By process of elimination if this did not resolve her diarrhoea it would most likely be a food intolerance and in which case we change her food.

Within 12 hours of her first dose of antibiotics we had our first firm stool in 2 weeks, they have consistently been that way since and she did not wake once last night for a toilet trip. I'll keep you posted once she finishes the course of antibiotics, fingers crossed this fixes the issue once and for all!

Hey Sunshineb75!!! I have a 19 week old stubborn little lady!!! The other night I fed her at about 6pm...from that time until 330am she pooped 8 times!!! Like others said, it starts out firm and gets progressively softer...almost like soft serve ice cream...ick!!

I had to up the amount of food I was giving her because the vet said she is underweight so of course I am sure that is not helping the amount she is going...I cannot feed her three times a day as I work an 8-4 job. She goes all throughout the night and refuses to wake me up to go outside or use the potty pads so I am waking up to poop all over the place....she eats it a lot of the times too. I am going insane and waking up to the smell of poop is less than pleasant. Any ideas guys!? Thanks!

Hi @Black Lab Mom try setting your alarm and get up before you think your pup needs to relieve herself - I know that is what a lot of people do. Can I ask if you are working 8 - 4 each day can the person that goes into see your girl not give her some lunch? I would think there is too much in one sitting for her little tummy and that's why she has the soft poop issue. I am sure someone more experienced than me will come along soon to give some more ideas for you. Meanwhile, welcome to the forum! :)

Hi @Samantha Jones !! Thanks for the reply and the warm welcome!! I don't really have anyone to go in and see her during the day, I am absolutely sure you are right that it is too much for her tummy!!! I am stuck as to what to do since I cannot feed her three times a day!! I set my alarm last night. I went to bed at 1030 pm after taking her out, I woke up at 315am to let her out and by that point she had already pooped twice, ate one of the poops, and peed once. When I took her out she refused to go....took her out again at 630 and she refused to go then too. She is one stubborn little lady!!

At 19 weeks old it will be physically impossible for her to hold her pee and poop overnight - I appreciate you have to work, but can you set your alarm for say 2 or 3 hour intervals? Alternatively do you have room to have a pen around her crate - you can then leave her crate door open and make a toilet area at the other end. Won't solve the eating of the poop (but that is quite a common thing I think - my boy used to eat fox pooh).

Is there anything like day care that you can take your little one to as being on her own for 8 hours plus a day is not great for her - is she in a crate for all this time? I'm not being critical but it may help the over night situation. Also during the day what arrangements does she have for her toileting needs then?
