Hey all My boy went to see the vet today due to chocking and gagging without vomiting. He woke up a few times during the night gasping for air. The vet basically said it is dog bronchitis / Kennel Cough but did not give any antibiotics other than a cough supressant. Anybody ever experience this? Any good home recommendations or remedies for quicker healing? Thanks
He should get better without any medication but if it does get worse give the vet a call. When our boy had kennel cough he was initially given nothing by the vet but then he spent all that night coughing so much he threw up (multiple times). So we took him back to the vet where he was given antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory to sooth his throat and stop the coughing. I'd just keep him cosy, well fed and make sure he drinks plenty. To encourage him to drink you can give him something he really likes now and then, like warmed chicken stock.
Depends how bad it is my vet has treated my dogs for it over the years. If they are really coughing and sicking up foam he treats, if its mild he just leaves them to recover. All have been fine with rest
My vet didn't prescribe snything fir Harley when she had it when she was younger. I did give her the odd teaspoon of manuka honey to help soothe her throat and it did help.
Hope your poor boy feels better soon. It's horrible to hear them hacking and feel helpless. Molly had kennel cough when she was about 10 months old -the only dog I've had to get it, so it came as a shock -but she was much better after just a few days. I rushed out to buy manuka honey when she had it but she hated the taste!
Thanks for the replies everyone!!! Much appreciated!!! Not much coughing just clearing throat action now. Hopefully it is getting better. I will definitely give him some honey
Cody started coughing this morning. I thought he had hair in his throat but when he is excitable he is starting. Sounds just like get youtube videos of kennel cough. He is fully up to date on vaccines but goes with a dog walker for last 3.5 weeks daily. None of the other dogs have shown any symptoms. Just waiting to see if she can just come let him our daily for a week or so rather than walking him. Scary for a 1st time owner and he looks so sad We are doing a honey concoction rather than vet at this stage. Fingers crossed it clears up else vets Monday morning.
Johnny how is he? Cody is much better. I'm now believing he had a cough/virus and NOT kennel cough thank goodness. He is still a little coughy but not as bad as Thursday. We gave honey and lemon and it worked wonders! He was almost back to his normal self within 24 hours in regards to bouncing around like a loon. Still keeping him away from the dog walkers other charges for a few days but hopefully he can be back with his lunch buddies by the end of next week
He is much better. One night he sneeze and a lot of green mucus came out of his nose... it happened about 3 times during the night. I wiped it off and cleaning him up. The next day no more coughing or sneezing. It almost seemed like he had an infection with loads of built up mucus.
Poor pups! I can strongly recommend honey (manuka if you can, but any honey is good). Dip a spoon in it then let them lick it off a tiny bit at a time, so it can coat their throat and soothe it. Pongo loves it. I'm sure it cheered him up as well as physically soothing his cough.
