While at work yesterday my wife and middle son Michael took Dawson for a walk to a place he normally enjoys.
A amn and woman approached with a Jack Russell off of lead and he attacked Dawson leaving a wound just below his eye.
The couple got their dog and hurried away leaving Dawson Rachael and Michael a bit bemused to put it mildly.
A £100 vet bill followed and I want to punch someones face in.

That's awful. I hope that Dawson isn't too upset by it all.

Sadly this is kind of common.....both the vet bill and the owners of the perpetrator who don't take any care or responsibility.

So sorry that this has happened to Dawson :(. Hope he's ok
If it's a place you know well, it might be worth asking around to find the owners are and report to the dog warden.

Oh no. :( Very sorry to hear this. I hope Dawson is doing better now. Wanting to punch someone's face in seems pretty much a logical response!

Thank you for your replies.Dawson is ok it would seem and although I am fuming it's one of those things that can happen anywhere and at any time so must be extra vigilant but not to the extent of stopping his fun around other dogs,

Poor Dawson, and you. These things can really spoil our day. I can understand the other owners wanting to get away, but if there was an obvious wound, they really should have offered to cover the vet bills :(

My own Jack Russell, a sweet little boy, friendly, loves his cuddles, gets on well with my other dogs, one day attacked another dog. I was completely shocked. I apologised profusely but was a loss to explain why he did it. The poor lady who owned the other dog was obviously upset, as I would be in that situation.
To this day I don't know what caused it. A scent maybe? A particular stance? No idea. However, he has only walked on the lead ever since.

If only all were as responsible as you, Aitch.

I am so sorry @Dave Bennett. I remember vividly when poor Bramble was attacked at 5 months old by a pack of collies. She carries a tiny scar just under her eye. I was incredibly upset, the owner was actually on his mobile and barely looked up at the time. Well, he did when I in anger, let Casper of his lead..

I think I was more shaken than Bramble, and I have to say this feeling lingered for some time. Some months back we met the same pack, I was walking with Bramble. She glanced at them with disdain...they were all barking...then walking past them without a second glance.

So, it's OK to feel angry, it will fade, Dawson is given so much good care, that like Bramble he will just brush this off in time and mark it up as one-off . Give him space and LOTS of positive reinforcement when meeting other well-mannered dogs, so Dawson can bank some great interactions, and I am sure you both will be fine! :)

It is upsetting when this happens. My 11 year old Lab was suddenly attacked, pinned to the floor and bitten on his face by an acquaintance's greyhound, it was frightening. The vet's bill was £75 and she reluctantly offered to pay half!

Sorry to read this , poor lad x I have owned JRT`s and Labs for many years , its always , always the owners fault and responsibility to ensure that their dog, no matter the breed , is not free to attack and if they do , then measures should be taken to ensure this doesn't ever happen again , if this means keeping a dog on lead then so be it . Sam was set upon last year, by a pack of dogs, seven of them and two of the seven were out of control and downright aggressive . Its horrible for us to see something like this , so very sorry for you and your boy x

Very sorry to hear this, it is horrible when your dog, especially if it's a puppy, gets bitten.

How nasty for both Dawson and you. I’d have felt the same.

Sorry this happened to Dawson. He will brush this offer quicker than what we would. Vanilla does not seemed phased after her few altercations as a pup, where as I am...

I think if a Jack Russell attacked Cooper, it might be the last thing he ever did. Cooper gets along fine with other dogs and plays very hard, but she recognizes the difference between play and real fighting.
