Our puppy seems to be scratching frequently. He's been treated with flea meds a week ago and I don't see any flea dirt, so I'm thinking it's either dry skin or food allergy? I've never had a dog with an allergy before, are there other symptoms that would be present if it were that? He's not had any bathroom issues. He's currently on Eukanuba small breed puppy from the breeder, which I'm going to be switching him off of (first three ingredients are Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Meal). I'm going to switch him over to Akela as they make a small sized kibble, and are well rated, but I'm just waiting for the samples to come in to make sure it's small enough. Our other dogs are on Millie's Wolfheart but their kibble sizes are all pretty large. He can still eat it but it wouldn't be good for use in training.

I'm also not sure which variety would be best, Akela make duck grain-free, fish grain-free, and original grain-free, which is a blend of chicken, turkey, and fish. Any other suggestions are appreciated as well. We'll be seeing the vet this Thursday for his second jab so I can ask then as well. In the meantime would omega oil help? Or perhaps some kind of spray to soothe the skin?

I don't know if this is of any help but Cassie is currently on Evening Primrose capsules which I hope will help balance her hormones post season and avoid another phantom pregnancy, it's too early yet to tell, but it's other main use is coat condition and itchy skin problems.

The folk I bought it from online were very helpful, and I see they have a range of other things that are promoted to help with itchiness etc, I'm not sure if it's ok to say the company name, but if you're interested I can PM you.

As your current food is chicken-based, I’d change to one that doesn’t contain any chicken, as that way you can test whether that’s what the skin is reacting to. I’d avoid using skin sprays at the same time ( unless prescribed by your vet) as if you change two things you won’t know if either has worked. For example I tried aloe vera on my last dog, who had itchy skin, but it actually made it worse.

It's possible that it's an allergy to something else in the environment, not the food.

Is it springtime where you are, SilverFalcon? Pollen can be a major cause of itching in spring/summer. In autumn mould spores (eg from decaying leaves, damp vegetation) can be a culprit.

Have a chat with the vet about that possibility as well.

Thank you all, I'll try their fish variety and see how that goes.

@Oberon no Autumn here, I'll be sure to ask the vet.
