Feeling a bit miffed today. Discovered last night that Red has chewed one of the seat belts in my car - it was a bit of a shock .
Ah, now I also have a chomped seat belt story that will hopefully make you smile, though it didn't do that to me at the time. This concerns our previous lab, BJ - epileptic but totally adorable. He was a right hooly of a pup but a very good little guy in the car - so we thought. Never a squeak, a grumble or a widdle when left for a few mins. Then the inevitable time came when the car ( unusually for us quite a modern low mileage job) went in for its MOT. THEN we found out why BJ was such a good boy when in the back of the car. He had pulled out and chomped through both rear seat belts so when the MOT tested tried to pull them out to test, there was nothing. Cost us a few hundred to get through the MOT and this was some 16 years ago The joys of lab company eh? Some things never change.
That's why Ripple is in a crate in the car - and if he was loose he probably wouldn't stop at just the seat belts!
Yep it was her - think she has hit adolescence!! Not content with just chewing her crate bedding. Arghh!! Unfortunately she is way too big now for the crate that fitted in my car. Blimey. Yes Red has been very quiet in the back there. She obviously fancied a nibble last night.
I'm lucky enough to have a crash tested crate adapted to fit my estate car. £££ but probably cheaper than new car seat belts and upholstery .
I've had this happen with a previous dog -- so have been wise to it with Cassie, she's never had access to seat belts
Apart from his Gotcha Day ride home in the car Bailey has never (she says crossing her fingers) shown any interest in chewing anything in the car - that said however, the back seat has several chew toys, permanently there, just in case he feels the need!
Vanilla has luckely never chewed anything in the car apart from her traveling teddy. But somehow we always have half the beach and sea
Axel has no time to chew anything in the car because he doesn’t stop whining the entire time Maybe I’ll offer him a seatbelt if it will get him to hush up
I understand how you feel. It's definitely hard when they ruin things... I had to try and tell myself the other day that she doesn't know she shouldn't do it ...
That’s it really, they don’t know and these things happen quickly and easily. I am a bit cross with myself though as this will be costly to put right. I am also feeling a bit miffed because she is chewing her bedding and I worry she will take a fancy to other things. I do feel we have spent a small fortune on the dogs this year one way or another which normally I wouldn’t really think about. Somehow when it’s to replace things, it’s a bit frustrating and the downside of dog ownership. I just need to get over it and move on..... I suppose it’s like all things, if I knew how long this ‘phase’ i.e the chewing phase, was going to last, I’d be a bit more philosophical .
When Amber did this I got replacement seat belts from Ebay. They are ridiculously easy to replace them yourself if that is any help?
It is frustrating but being angry doesn’t change anything sadly, at the end of the day what’s done is done and they don’t know why you’re upset. Axel has destroyed all four of my couch pillows, my cozy throw blanket, two of his quite expensive beds, two tea towels, my shoes, he ate his cone a couple days after being neutered, my bra, he ate a whole box and plastic wrapping for a box of laminate flooring which he did try to eat the flooring as well but must have been too hard to break up because there are only teeth marks on them. Those are just the things that come to mind off the top of my head. These are all things that took minutes to destroy and some only seconds, such as the pillows and tea towels. He turns two in December and he is getting much better but the box of flooring only just happened a couple of months ago! Sigh. He still likes to steal tea towels and the only place there are safe is on top of the fridge. I was warned when I wanted a lab that they will eat/chew anything, I just brushed that off not really believing it! Haha do I feel silly now. But I would not trade him for anything as I’m sure is the same for you with Red. I can look back on these things now and laugh. If I’m not going to be in a room with him for more than a few minutes I make sure he has access to a chew that he likes and that keeps him busy. But mostly now he just lies down and waits for me to come back into the room I left him in. So it will get better! It’s unfortunate when it’s something expensive
@Kelsey&Axel You could be writing about me and lab Gosh the things my dog has wrecked...he's torn up carpet, chewed the walls, shoes, my phone, you get the picture. The most scary one was he somehow got a hold of the electric toothbrush and snuck off to chew it downstairs. I came down later to find the outside completely chewed off with the inner core exposed, full of wiring and batteries, with a big warning saying Danger of Explosion if Compressed. He had been CHEWING IT! That was really scary. Oh, another scary one, he snuck downstairs with the bottle of toilet cleaner. He was fine thank goodness, but the expensive rug he emptied the dark green liquid onto was not I keep all chemicals out of reach but that one was on the floor tucked behind the loo and a shelf, I thought it was safe
