Oh goodness... The good news is, it can almost always be repaired so that you'd not know it afterwards. The bad news of course is the cost and the recovery time...
So sorry to hear this. Poor Duggan. The surgery and rehab is not without its challenges. Keep your chin up x
What a major bummer I'm really sorry to hear that. It's not something I know a lot about, but I've been told by my vet that in a young dog a cruciate tear doesn't just happen without an existing problem. That is, if it tears, the ligament is weak to start with. A normal ligament won't just tear during normal activity (which includes vigorous running, turning, jumping). Interestingly, in humans, they don't always bother repairing cruciate ruptures these days. Humans are a lot more compliant than dogs are with recovery regimes, rehab, limiting activity etc. though... It's not an easy road but plenty have been down it and have come out of it just fine in the end. I'm sure that Duggan will too. He still has the long, happy, active life ahead that you want for him.
So sorry it was bad news. But there have been dogs on here who have made complete recoveries. Thinking of you and your boy.
Thinking of you this morning, how are you all doing? I expect you are all still a bit shell-shocked. Just take things a day at a time right now.
I'm so sorry to read this. Poor Duggan and poor you. You must be so worried for him. Thinking of you all.
Once again I thank you all for your kind words and support. This morning when we woke up Duggan met us all with the same enthusiasm and spirit as he does every day which was very encouraging and nice to see. He’s up to his old tricks already only two days later, albeit only using three of his legs and it doesn’t even seem to be slowing him down at all. Should find out about surgery today. He will be back on the ducks next season I’m sure.
Horrible to read this and fingers crossed for poor Duggan My brother in law's dog (age 3) had a similar injury happen while running in the early summer. He will be getting TPLO surgery in the winter when it will be easier to manage recovery. In the meantime, they are treating the pain with meds and restricted exercise (short leash walks only). The results of the surgery is usually quite successful from what I've read. Thinking of you guys!
