Alfie has managed to injure the end of his tail by wagging it too enthusiastically and banging it (happy tail).

I have bandaged it up so when my OH comes home he won't re open it but has anyone else had this happen their dog and has any tips on helping it heal?

    Thank you

It can be a problem when that happens and because they are happy Labs, they wag and tend to open the wound again. I think you can buy something off the internet to put on the end of the tail to protect it. I am sure there will someone with the correct knowledge on what it should be in no time whatsoever :)

Hope Alfie wound settles and does not open up again.
PIL had a dog that had a wound on the tail. Took ages to go back to normal and heel up, from memory about 2months. Everytime it wagged it split open.

Just remembered, I bought a tail guard 'thingy' from the vet to help Drift's tail to heal.

Off to the vet tomorrow evening (earliest we could get an appointment!). They said in the meantime to try and bandage it, keep it clean and keep him calm :s.

He is fine in himself which is great but it does mean he's his usual exuberrant self with the bonkers tail that goes with it! He doesnt seem to feel that it's hurt :s.

Years ago my parents lab damaged the end of his tail and he kept on wagging it opening up the wound and splashing blood everywhere. To enable the tail to heal the vet used part of a large syringe as a guard. When dog wagged his tail there was drumming on the walls and furniture, eventually the tail healed and normal ways resumed.

It looked like the end of a syringe and you taped it onto the tail. I will see if I can find it on the internet.

The vet has put a foam tube like you d cover a pipe with round Alfie's tail so it's now well protected. Hope, if he can leave it alone, it ll now heal up nicely :) (touch wood)
