    Hi,
I have been taking my 14 week old puppy Thor for a walk on a leash around the neighborhood and he starts to whine a few minutes into it. He’ll continue to walk right next to me but will whine and then pull to go home. I have taken him to the beach twice off the lead and he is fine running around.

Will he grow out of this? Should I be doing something to help him?

I’ve given him water and treats as well.

    Thanks
    Arti

Yes, he will grow out of it. Until then make your walks really short. Try to start ant the end of the walk and walk home, that’ll help a lot.

Thanks. Any suggestions for jumping to meet people as they walk by him? He’s very social and loves to meet people so when he walks wants to meet everyone

When my puppy Red was small, if someone started making a beeline for her I would put my hand out in a ‘stop’ gesture and ask them to wait a moment. I would then ask her to sit and put my foot on part of her lead so she was gently anchored to the ground. They were then allowed to greet her. I would explain to the person that I did’t want her jumping up at them as she was going to be a big heavy dog and I didn't want her to hurt anyone by jumping.

Make sure that you don't treat after whining otherwise you can be re-inforcing the whine

Can I ask what your neighbourhood is like? Busy? Lots of new smells for example.

Whining and pulling to go home may indicate it is too far (as has been suggested in advising shorter walks..) or it is a bit overwhelming for him.

@Beanwood - the Main Street is pretty busy with traffic but once we turn the corner of the street it’s quiet and residential. He usually whines once we turn the corner.

@Atemas - I usually hold onto his harness but he’s pulling like crazy. It’s more him wanting to meet the people than the other way around.
