I wondered if it’s typical for a 16 month old lab to still play bite? He generally only does it to my husband when he’s in the living room, he’ll sit with him, roll over on his back for tummy rubs, big smiley croc-face on, but then get over excited and start play biting/nipping. Just thought he might have grown out of it by now. DH always says no when he starts but he’s a stubborn dog

Stanley still gets a bit mouthy sometimes. He's really gentle when he knows it's skin though. I always just say "no teefs" and he turns it to licks :)

It’s probably DH inadvertently encouraging it.

My rule, and that of all trainer/behaviourists I know is once all adult teeth in place in the mouth there should be no contact of teeth and human skin. A dog's teeth are his weapons and shoud not contact skin. As @Boogie says OH may inadvertently be reinfircing through play so introduce a new rule. Any touch of teeth/mouth on human skin stops play. Pause for 10 seconds or so and resume play with a cue word. They very quickly learn what is causing the interruption to play and is far more effective than saying 'No' which obviously has no meaning for your boy :)

@Jojo83 Harley likes to lick and nibble my earlobes (I know this sounds weird but she does it when we are snuggling), she does it gently though. Should I stop allowing that?

Hi @Harley Quinn I think it all comes down to how the dog 'nibbles' and how you feel about it. My advice is not to allow teeth on skin but I also tell my clients it's their dog, their home, their rules :) If you're happy and Harley is happy - enjoy :) . My only word of caution would be to be aware around visitors/children/people who might come in to contact with her as they might not appreciate a lick and nibble :)

Luckily my ears are the only ones she nibbles. But we did have a very embarrasing incident the other night. Harley loves to lick and because I often feel guilty because I don't play with her as much as DH I will let her cuddle and lick me. I don't like my face licked though so she will lick my neck or chest, depending on clothing. And the other night she stuck her face right into a friends private chest area and lick away. We were horrified but Harley thought it was great so you are right, I need to remember that she can't discern on the spot what is appropriate and what isn't. :$

    Thank you will try that.
He generally carries on stroking him after saying no to biting so Loki probably thinks him doing it is getting him fuss.

It's what makes training so much fun - solving what we have inadvertently trained :).

Hope your friend saw the funny side - Harley was just expressing how much she liked them :) :)
