I'm going to the vet at lunch time to pick up a third course of antibiotics for Scott !!! ??? The first course was 3 days to stop the vomiting. Which it did. Unfortunately his bowel movements (lovely) got looser. 6 days after finishing the course he had diarrhea. Second coarse 5 days to stop the diarrhea. Motions improved after a day but never completely back to normal. Now 6 days after finishing the course diarrhea again, well nearly, very loose. Whatever it is can't be contagious as Scout is fine. It's a mystery and I don't like mysteries especially when it comes to my dogs. I'm destined to have dogs with dodgy bowels. After 15 years of Murphy and his colitis I have slight paranoia about bowels (slight ha ) and was hoping for dogs with cast iron stomachs like some have. No such luck. : Jen.
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! So worrying. I hope you find out what's up. Must be concerning when you've had so much trouble before.
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Back from vet 5 more days of antibiotics. If no significant improvement in 3/4 days will do a blood test!!!! Some of you might recall my dogs don't like strangers coming near never mind touching its going to be a nightmare. Ever the pessimist I'm assuming the tablets won't work the last lot didn't so dont see why they will this time. Fingers crossed. ???
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Jen, just thinking back, at one time one of my dogs got a sort of long-term loose bowel situation... It turned out he had a sort of candida infection, general antibiotics did not clear it, it took examination of his stools and a blood test to diagnose what exactly was causing the problem. Eventually the right kind of antibiotics were prescribed, and his condition improved.
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Well I will be optimistic for you Jen!sometimes ( I know! :) it's impossible to be positive when you are worried about your own dog....some I'm sending lots of positive vibes over to you from someone who has got a cast iron stomach......me.....not dexter! ;D
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Thank you all . I did suggest a stool sample he looked at me a bit strange. That's how they diagnosed campylobacter last year. That needed a specific antibiotic. That's why I'm assuming these won't work. If its a bacteria that is resistant then I don't see the point of giving the same antibiotics without knowing what it is. But they're the experts. : I'm trying to convince myself it is a bacteria or something similar and not something more serious because the antibiotics do help. Just have to wait and see.
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! All this antibiotics for diarrhoea is a bit odd to my medically trained brain. I know things like campylobacter and giardia benefit from treatment, but I always worry that antibiotics knock out the good bacteria. Have you used live/bio youghurts before? I am quite sure they won't cause harm and might help ??
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! I think you're right jac....I'm convinced that we ended up in a bit of a vicious circle on the meds stripping the gut of all bacteria and endless runny bum when riley was young. A short starve, chicken and rice and yoghurt are our default responses now.....only go to the vet if he can't keep the chicken and rice down.
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Ive been giving my two probiotic/prebiotic supplement since the campylobacter. I agree about the antibiotics especially the ones I've got today. If they didn't work last week why will they work this. I also don't understand why he wants to do bloods before testing a stool sample. He's been treating him as if bacterial infection so surely it makes sense to test for resistant bacteria first, especially as Scott is so nervous and scared he'll freak out at the clippers. I am going to ask why bloods first if no particular reason I'll ask for stool test first easier for Scott me and vet! ! : Have to wait and see what happens next few days now. I best start touching wood.
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! I think I will Jacqui Although I don't really like telling the vet what to do. I know I'm paying, it's my dog etc but they are the expert and while I'm causing a fuss things could get worse. Although if it was somebody else's dog (eg one of the other family dogs) it wouldn't bother me. It's easy to be more objective when it's not your own I think. ;D Jen
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Well to put it bluntly angela it seemed a bit firmer this morning. Definitely firmer than yesterday. : There is nothing wrong with him in himself eating normal, drinking normal and as lively as ever. It also, whatever it is, hasn't made him go more than normal. In fact he's going less. ??? As a general rule Scott goes twice a day Scout goes once. Since this mystery illness Scott's only been going once ! Sorry you didnt really need to know all that. Thanks for asking Angela and I hope your Dex is doing well and you are recovering too. Jen
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Sorry Jen, Slow, catching up,don't worry ,I've started loads of poo discussions....dexters bowels were a mystery to me as many things were when he arrivesd!I felt like I spent 2 months discussing poo, even taking photos of it! Dex is good ,I've updated quickly on the war and peace post! ;D only got time to check in on the health topics....to check everyone is ok... Nnite x
Re: OMG what did my dog eat?!?!?! Taking photos of it!! Ha ha Angela...that competes with the photo I took of Simba's slightly swollen neuter wound I took to show vet but forgot to delete from phone....
