Does anyone use an LED light up dog collar? Now that the days are shortening, I'll soon be doing dog walks in the dark, and particularly thought this might be useful. Any recommendations? Or are they a waste of time?
Re: Light up dog collars Last time we tried them Riley was quite young and he was always trying to get to his collar as they distracted him. We'll probably try again this winter though so I await everyone's replies with interest. We've got an extra dog tag on his collar so we can hear him jingling away when he's out of sight which helps in the woods in the daytime too. At least Poppy is yellow!! Riley barely shows up even if you have a torch with you
Re: Light up dog collars I do, Karen. I use them at night when I let the dogs out into the garden before bedtime. On a moonless night it is totally pitch black here on Exmoor as there is no light pollution and it would be totally impossible to see Murffi whizzing around in the darkness. I bought mine very cheaply on eBay and they have lasted a couple of years so far. But they are only switched on for a few minutes every night in the winter months.
Re: Light up dog collars I've just ordered one that will clip onto his collar - I'm not sure how we'll get on with it. I'm a bit concerned the collar will swivel round and the light will be in his face. We'll see though. I'll try tightening the collar of course!
Re: Light up dog collars Karen, I use them all the time as well. I use the twist to oporate clip on types. Much cheapness. ;D They flash alternate LEDs so it looks similar to a strobe effect. It hangs from the collar ring or you can attach to lead clip if you are walking. I used it on Finley the other day and he didn't seem to bother about it flashing the ground in front of him and he is very bright.

Re: Light up dog collars I have a high viz jacket for Sam , which he hates with a passion, but it is very good . We have a little red ball , had it for one of our old terriers, it fits to the collar and when activated, it flashes on and off in the dark so that we can track Millie in the garden
Re: Light up dog collars I used on of the attachable ball lights on Billy when he was very old and deaf and used to get disorientated and lost in the bushes at night... It was ok I guess, but wasn't what I was thinking of for this time. I've seen other people using the actual LED collars and thought it was a great idea, but they are quite expensive so I didn't want to purchase yet more doggy equipment, if it is only going to lie around in a drawer! There seems to be quite a range in prices. Hmmm.
Re: Light up dog collars One snag I have been told about with the collars is that if the dog is facing away from you or head down, you cannot see it. A flashing clip on type lights up the ground in front of the dog so you can see it which ever way he is facing. Doesn't tell you if he is running away or coming back though!! ???
Re: Light up dog collars I use a clip on flasher too. Seems to work fine and a night walk across fields with a black Lab is interesting without one!

Re: Light up dog collars I opted for a fluorescent collar as the light up ones weren't often lit up all around. I guess the flashing ones are best - we had one but Lilly got it off and crunched it as a pup. We were standing looking at the flashing way up by the tree and suddenly realised she was standing at the door waiting to be let in ;D The fluorescent mostly suits us as IF she is off in the dark then we always have our headlights on as we are sans street lights.
Re: Light up dog collars I bought one from Amazon UK called '''Canac K9 Lites Safety Collar Medium / Large '' for £5.95 with free post. It has lots of flashing LEDS and is very reflective and is good for the price. Its not a collar that you attach a lead to it is for use as well as the normal dog collar. Not sure on the rules on links here but here it is: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002TZWITU/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (moderator please delete it if it's wrong to post links)
Re: Light up dog collars Actually, this is very similar to the one we have (forgot it actually had those wee flashing bits - not used it for so long)
Re: Light up dog collars I've gone for an actual collar with a light-up section. Not very expensive, and OH can roll his eyes all he wants :. (Anyway I'm hoping the collar will distract him, when the amazon package with the Aigle wellies arrives ;D).
