So, Otis is now six and a half months, and has just had his castration done about a week ago. The thing is he still isnt toilet trained, I went to my parents for about ten days and really seemed to have cracked it as they have easy access from there back door to the garden unlike here. But back home, Otis has been pooing and weeing indoors these last couple of days, its worrying, as he was just weeing indoors. I realise I have to put him out a lot , and praise when he goes outside. I hope its just the change in location, or even the castration. He shouldnt poo so much as his food has been halved since he went onto adult food. So is there anything else i should do ?? Im worried a bit because he is over six months old, now, and wonder if he will ever just , get it ! Thanks, Maggie

I think you may struggle to fix this without one Maggie. The only answer is to break the habit, and that is hard to do if it means watching him every second. You are bound to slip up. Sometimes, confining the dog to a room where he has never messed can break the cycle. But usually, it means crating the dog for periods of time to let his bladder fill up in a place where he is very unlikely to wee.

Hi Pippa, Thanks for your help. My ground floor is quite open plan, so hard to confine him to one room. How do you think he will take to being crated at his age and after not being crated for a month ? I will get a bigger crate, if thats what its going to take, but not sure he will like it. Is this really the only way ? Actualy just thinking I could get a stair gate and partition off the front room where he hasnt weed or pooed, that might do it and solve the problem of having to crate him. So how long but between taking him out ? Thanks again, Maggiex

You will have to experiment. At six months he is capable of lasting a couple of hours, but this isn't about his capacity so much as his 'habit'. So I would start with very short periods of time. Treat him like a little pup for a while. Take him out, if he goes that's fine, if he doesn't you need to confine him, watch him like a hawk (some people have success by tying the dog to them) for 30 mins or less, then try outside again. If you still get accidents, shorten the gaps between toilet breaks. Stretch them out again slowly and with caution as you succeed.

Thankyou Pippa. I have bought today a spay from pets at home to get rid of the urine smell, so hopefuly it will work and he wont want to wee in the same place. I will try short intervals for taking him out, and hope he starts to improve, thanks again, Maggie
