On Tuesday a colleague gave me some dogs toys no longer used by her dog. Cody has had an instant attachment to them.

Two in particular both as. 1 a bird and 1 a Santa on a stick type rubber thing.

Anyway he spends his time with his toys talking to them, whining at it, squeaking at it, etc. He has never done this before.... ever. It's very funny but we were also quite surprised.

He has also this week started barking when someone is at the door. Again new.

Anyone else experienced the sudden vocabulary of their dog?

Yes. Our boy was silent as a puppy. He then showed us his deafening bark when he wanted our attention - not often thankfully, and we don’t encourage it. But in the past year or two (he’s almost 6 yo) he has started to speak a LOT! Squeaks, groans, grumbling, humming, talking sounds (I kid you not!). And in the past few weeks he has started to bark at me when I get home from work, as if to say indignantly: where have you been?! (He’s not alone, my husband works from home.) And if he wants his walk and we’re lying in bed, he goes onto the balcony and gives one bark - he knows that gets us out of bed in a flash!! We definitely do not condone this type of barking though. The barking I think he’s learned from the very barky puppy next door. The talking (such cute sounds!), well, we encourage that, we love it! We make the same noises back to him - I wonder what we’re saying?!!
