I mis-typed @Karen's Poppy as Poopy the other day. Just thought I'd mention it :D

Really helpful this info, exactly what happens to Maisy and I was going to post about it, this has put my mind at rest - and made poo even more interesting, thanks.

BTW I am always on this forum when I am at work and share what's going on with my non-dog owner colleague who says we are all talking a load of s**t.

I think the colour does depend a lot on food, but a change in colour is something to be noted. When my lot are "softer", they tend to be lighter. Then there's that awful green colour we've (thankfully) not seen since Willow was a puppy!

If Ella has kangaroo meat then her poo is really dark! Definitely food related :)

Thank you for the info! I happily explained it to my husband on our morning dog walk after the second poo. Ah, the romance is still alive.;)

Sometimes Inky's poo is a 2 but more often softer. Does anyone add pumpkin pulp or any other natural fibre?

Oh no, the Pig is now fully on her new food (but only has been for about 5 days) and her poos are now a ‘1’! Not difficult to go, but definitely small and dry and almost crumbly. Does this mean the slightly higher meat content isn’t suiting her, or should I wait and see?

Monty had this a couple of times, vet suggested a drizzle of Olive oil in with food. It then fixed itself within 2or3 days so we didn't have to continue with the oil, but it's happened more than once and this is my go to fix.

What are you feeding her? If she’s eating raw meaty bones, dry and crumbly means too many bones, not too much meat.

It’s just a higher meat-content kibble. She used to be on James Wellbeloved that I think was about 20% meat, and she is now on Millie’s wolfheart which is 60% meat and 40% veg origin. It’s salmon, trout, venison and rabbit I think. I am worrying whether she is now getting too much meat, because her high value treats for training are sardines and roast chicken...she doesn’t get much (either half a thigh or half a ton of sardines) a day but maybe it might be protein overload?

Oh god haha I mean half a tin, not half a ton. Man that would be a lot of sardines  anyone’s poo wouldn’t be right after that!

Oh interesting! Perhaps I will try that if it doesn’t resolve itself before I consider changing the food again.

Sounds like a very rich food, but not sure it would result in crumbly poo, but then I'm no poo expert  x

She might just need a few more days adjusting to it, five days in isn't that long. Could you try a bit of sweet potato or cooked carrot ? Though suppose you probably want to keep things constant for a while...

My dog eats a raw meat and bones diet so he eats a lot of meat. In fact, the guidance for prey-model feeding is 80% muscle meat, 10% organs, and 10% bones. I must confess that he probably gets more bone than that cos the bones are big and I can’t chop them up, and he gets a lot of raw and cooked veg cos we’re vegetarian so there’s a lot of that around. So if I were to calculate how much meat he’s getting as a percentage, well, I don’t accurately know! But if I were you, I wouldn’t be worrying if he’s getting too much meat. However, dry poo usually means too little liquid, and veg fibre will absorb liquid and help make the poo softer - so if it doesn’t resolve, you could add some veg. I’d also look at the bone content in the food - too high and that could contribute to dry poo.

Thanks that’s useful! Hmm the ingredients don’t mention anything that looks like bone but I am not sure how they would name it. But I’ll leave it a few more days then perhaps try some cooked veg with it. Trouble is I only bought a trial size pack and it’s running out so I need to make the decision whether to buy more or go with a down to their 50% meat instead. The ingredients of this food are quite hilarious, it looks like some posh menu you’d get in some hipster restaurant...camomile powder and dried cranberry anyone?
