Is my lab puppy an English or American lab?

Yes, agree with everone else, a bit of weight to shift but nothing that can't be easily fixed with a controlled diet and working out what motivates him activity wise.

 

I can see the photos without problems. Have to agree wuth the weight problem - this boy is seriously overweight whether 'American' or 'English'.

 

European/British labs tend to have squarer heads and heavier bone whereby American lines are finer and more athletic looking. I used to have American line Dobes and it was the same there too. The German lines were heavier set dogs

 

The distinction is more ‘show line’ versus ‘working line’. There are stacks of lighter built working line Labradors in the UK and they’re as English as... dunno...umm...tea and scones? When I first joined the forum I did not realise this, expecting them all to be fairly solid, but I have been enlightened

 

Having said that most Labradors don’t go in shows and don’t do any work. So we need a Sofa Line category, I reckon

 

I've discovered something interesting lately as I look for a Lab pup in the UK. In the UK, the bigger, leggier, larger-headed dogs are known as "American type" in show circles and some people are actually importing American lines as stud to get a heavier-boned dog in the UK. In the US, the bigger, heavier-boned type is known as "English"...which is very confusing.

In general, a US to UK translation would be: UK "show" = US "English" and UK "field" or "working" = US "American".

Coco, you don’t have to have Sofa Line Champions in your ancestry to achieve Sofa Dog (SD) status. That Sofa needs you on it.

How can that be comfortable It never ceases to amaze me the positions our beloved dogs can adopt in sleep!

 

Cooper is definitely an American or Field style Lab. She stands 24" at the withers (even taller at the butt) and has a decided tummy tuck. What I find interesting, is that she also has big stout legs and large feet. Her legs look much stronger than many other similar sized dogs (not labs) that we see. At 80# she is not huge, but she has a longer jaw, and can hold 2 tennis balls inside her mouth. She is pretty much the opposite shape from Tilly. Together they look like Mutt and Jeff.
