Hi All Looking for some advice please. Our 14 month old boy seems to have developed a habit of only peeing or pooing when were out on a walk. Although I take him out 1st thing in the morning, this isn't always possible. Im trying to break the routine of us going out at 7 every morning to keep him adaptable, but at the moment he wont do anything in the garden. He goes out and sits on the bench which is cute, but its as though he's waiting to go for a walk before he will do anything. Were not sure if there is something in the garden that is scaring him? Anybody got any suggestions on how we can break this routine and get him peeing and pooing in his own garden again? Many thanks
Would love to see if anyone can help, Finn is the same, but finally after 18 months he will Pee in the garden last thing at night now. Yippee, only 3 walks a day instead of 4!
Hi there and welcome. I think this is completely normal; many dogs see the garden as an extension of the house and develop an aversion to peeing or pooing there. My dogs will only go right at the very bottom of the garden...
Yep, agree with @Karen, Cassie would rather not pee or poo in garden, if she does so, its right by the perimeter fence. When I was a kid our family springer would jump the fence at the bottom of the garden to go in the woodland and then jump back in again!
Not unusual at all Some digs just don't like leaving their scent around the garden. You could try popping his lead on and walking around the garden and see if that makes a difference. I have a limited slip lead that I have only ever used for toileting in the garden morning and bedtime and have no problems wherever we are at home or on holiday.
My boy likes to keep his own yard clean too. We have a good sized yard, I can see it would be a problem in a tiny yard, if your dog wants it clean. An idea, bring some poop home with you and plant it in your garden. If he hasn't used it for a while then your yard is clean and just maybe re-establishing poop scent in will help. Or not.
Our boy is the same. He used to poo in the garden but once he settled in he only poos when on a walk. Thankfully he will have a wee in the garden (by the edges). He goes out for a walk between 6.30am - 8.30am depending on the day of the week and for a walk between 4.30pm and 7pm (poos on both walks) He has more recently employed a dog walker for lunchtimes and Ive not idea if he goes then. However when we use to pop home at lunchtime we would just let him out for a wee. Its nice to know he likes to keep his space clean. However, we have noticed that even when ill he will try and hold it for a walk so we are very aware when he isn't "right" to just walk him out to the grass 2 seconds down the road for him to go.
I was gonna sugest planting some in the back of the garden as well. Also with my boy he needs to get his motor running before he goes so A lead walk around the perimeter might also help. Good to see so many hygiene conscious dogs out there. Lol
