Popped out tonight to check everyone had gone to bed. When I noticed one of my two Muscovy ducks looking a bit odd and sat outside one of the sheds. On closer examination, I found she was sat in the wet and cold keeping 7 (or 8...) ducklings warm. They look about a day old, lord knows where she had been brooding them!

I carefully bundled them all in my jumper (followed by a very irate mother duck..) and popped them into a shed, where I knew they would be safe from predators. Then the task of reuniting mum with her ducklings...not so easy! Eventually managed to reunite mum with her ducklings.

Photos tomorrow..but boy do I need a drink!

    Video? ;)

OK, how do you lure a mother duck? Get a drink (still doing dry October??) and tell us all about it :)

PS Jemima... the duck... in a puddle?

What on earth am I going to do with 7 ducklings this time of year, as if we are not busy enough...sigh.

Well, we think we have worked out where she was brooding them. Quite a walk to get them into the main poultry run bless her! Checked in in her this morning and mum and ducklings are fine. I can confirm we have 7 baby muscovies!
Will nip down and take a few photos later :)

Update: So the little darlings are doing well, growing like weeds, time-consuming and eating us out of house and home. They are still with mum and boarding with our 2 ancient runner ducks...:)

Oh how nice! They look like a healthy bunch! I love the rooster crowing in the background. It's all so peaceful with the happy duckies muttering away:inlove:

You mean "huge". They look pretty "huge".

When I first saw Kate's ducks, I asked her OH if they were some sort of duck-shaped goose. He had a good laugh at me over that, as apparently they are normal-sized for their breed, I'd just not encountered such "sturdy" ducks before.

I think Kate just has a strange outlook on proper animal sizes. I mean, consider Remy, the COUS (Cat of Unusual Size). :D

Glad to hear the ducklings are thriving despite their oddly-timed birthday!
