Hi, I'm looking for advice on puppy diet. Newest pup is 6 months old and her poo is so soft, always has been. She is still on 3 meals a day, and fed on a mix of Pedigree kibble and tinned. Never had this problem with other labs so am wondering if I should drop to 2 feeds a day or change brand. any thoughts?
Hi @Fantamum, there can be several reasons for soft poos some if which require testing by your vet and others relate to actual diet. One if the most common causes of soft poo is overfeeding, frequently based upon a manufacturers over estimate of how much a puppy/dog needs to eat each day. So rather than reducing from 3 meals to 2 reduce how much is fed a day which should lead to firmer poos. What you feed can also play a part in quantity/frequency/condition of poo in a puppy or dog. I would certainly recommend a change from Pedigree food which is rated as one of the worst available on the market. Have you read the ingredients on the side of the pack? Do you really want to feed your dog on poultry or animal byproduct which can include feet/hoof/beak etc? A different food will make a big difference. To me, feeding pedigree or Bakers or Isms to a dog every day is like feeding a child McDonald's every day. There are a lot of decent brands out there that are reasonable priced. Worth doing your research plus don't feed the recommended amounts as they are often far too much - this can cause very soft stools.
