Ha - breakthrough on the training front!!!! ;D At our training class yesterday, it was pointed out to me that although Poppy is a great little dog, her heel work goes all to pot when a dummy is anywhere in sight, and also that she doesn't sit absolutely straight next to my leg, meaning that I cant reliably send her out straight on a blind retrieve. I know that. And I blame the OH, who thinks it is all over the top and completely unnecessary. He lets her prance around when he is carrying the dummy, and doesn't enforce a proper sit before throwing a dummy or sending her for a retrieve. But today, he came back from a walk with Poppy, to tell me that he has suddenly realized where 'we' are going wrong. : He had a kind of 'eureka' moment, where he recognized that if he doesn't throw the dummy UNTIL POPPY IS WALKING TO HEEL PROPERLY, then she will learn to walk to heel very fast, because she is a clever little dog and loves to retrieve more than anything else in the world. He also suddenly realized that similarly, if he refuses to throw the dummy or send her for a retrieve UNTIL SHE IS SITTING PROPERLY, she will very quickly learn to sit directly next to the leg instead of diagonally halfway in front of it. Duh!!! I just smiled, and told him how much I appreciated his cooperation...
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Top class work, Karen...I'll have to take a leaf out of your book! Brilliant!
Re: The dog, the training and the OH I cannot tell you how much I gritted my teeth Julie. My jaws were aching!!!!! But I decided it was worth it, to keep him onside...
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Well done! you did the right thing, it'll be more than worth it. You have to have fun with it - next time you're out say "how should we get Poppy to sit again?". Don't overdo it though, or you'll give yourself away!
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Training the OH is far harder than training the dog. Try adding 4 children into the mix aswell :
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Tell me about it...OH has taught Charlie to sit on him in return for food...oh, but when it's OH's food that's completely different ! : had a loooong conversation tonight about stay on mat while OH is eating proofing - painful! :
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Yep, I am having some success with the MAT at the kitchen door, Charlie gets it no problem, Hattie is another matter : I am not a fan of the clicker so just using the word 'mat'. David worked at home today as no trains into London. We start dinner I say 'mat' off they go but Hattie creeps in David gives her a pat and chats to her whilst I like a fool am trying to train the FAMILY dogs. No dinner for David if he continues to ignore me ;D
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Good work, Karen!!!!! My hubby has pretty much trashed his recall cue through indiscriminate overuse, so I got him a whistle so he could start from scratch with a new cue. I've been teaching Obi to recall to the whistle to start things off and it's going really well. But so far I haven't let hubby touch the whistle :
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Just about ALL our good house manners have now gone for a burton : : : Apart from a couple of food incidents this week we hadn't bothered TOO much but a stolen biscuit half an hour ago has got me about to lay down the law!
Re: The dog, the training and the OH Wow - OH is now totally onside. Has been out yesterday AND today teaching the 'get back' command. Tomorrow he's going to show me how to do it. Am stunned. 8)
