Help! My 9 year old black lab has suddenly got bald patches, under belly, armpits, flanks. Hair everywhere, she’s a bit itchy, I’ve deflead the entire house with vet approved spray, I’ve de fleas her with bravecto and washed all bedding. We moved to new house in September that had a cat! We don’t have cats. She eats a good raw food diet and my pointer is fine although itchy too but no hair loss. I fleas house a week ago! Hair still falling out in handfuls, she seems happy in herself! Any ideas? No bites or scabs noticeable on skin...

Welcome to the forum. Sorry that it’s a problem that brings you here.

I’d be taking your dog to the vet. Skin issues can be hard to diagnose, and there could be a whole range of different things causing this problem (eg mites, allergies...). A vet will be able to narrow it down and give your dog treatment that’s targeted at the cause.

Hi yes been to vet who said ‘could be’ mites, de flea house which I’ve done and wait two weeks. Which I’ve done. Next step is a skin scrape (which isn’t nice and she doesn’t react well to) and blood tests but wanted to see if anyone else to offer an idea. I don’t always have complete faith in vets!

Check the humidity levels in your new house, dry air could be a culprit. Rather extreme I think, but proper humidity might help, and is better for you, your wood and your electronics. You need a hygrometer and maybe a humidifier if it is too dry.

You can get medicated shampoos that might help. Be warned, what works for one may not for another dog. I tried 5 Vet recommended shampoos before I found one that helped.

I’d be going down the road of having the vets check for mites. I would definitely be wanting to rule out mites (eg mange mites) at this point.

It sounds like an pretty extreme response so I don’t think humidity levels would be the culprit. Dry air might cause itching (which is not nice!) but not hair falling out.
